| span-dog's Full Review: Sun Devil Stadium |
Its a shame that the Arizona Cardinals are the only NFL team to be playing in a stadium that's designed only for college athletics. Its also a shame that the Cards are the laughing stock of the NFL not only because of its less than mediocre product on the field, but also because of its less than mediocre playing facility which is Sun Devil Stadium. Sun Devil Stadium was built back in the 1950's during the hey day of Arizona State University football.
When owner Bill Bidwell moved the Cardinals from St. Louis back in 1988, part of his criteria for moving the team was that eventually a more dynamic venue would be built for the Cardinals to play in. He was hoping for a domed facility (remember, Phoenix does get hot during August and September) with a retractable roof similar to Bank One Ballpark. However, since the Cardinals ownership and the Phoenix area taxpayers are too cheap to get the funding to start up this project, we the Phoenix sports fans have to put up with an outdated and oversized college stadium to house one of the oldest franchises in the NFL.
There are many reasons why going to a Cardinals game is more of a chore to sports fans than one of enjoyment. First of all, trying to get decent parking is a royal pain in the butt. I personally recommend leaving at least three hours before kickoff to find decent parking. Since Sun Devil Stadium is in the heart of the ASU campus, parking facilities are not as prevalent as other stadiums that are located either downtown or in the suburbs. Parking not only is relatively a pain, but also expensive. I would recommend bringing at least ten dollars, if you don't want to walk too far. Otherwise if you like to do a little street hiking, its only 5 bucks.
Another bad thing about Sun Devil Stadium is its seating. Since it was designed primarily to be a college stadium, all the seating on the lower and upper decks are benches. Unlike, all other NFL stadiums which have chairs with backs and arms in the lower and upper decks, the chairs are about as comfortable as a high school stadium. The luxury boxes at Sun Devil Stadium are also terrible. They lack the comfort and state of the art amenities that most other stadiums have to offer. Even though the seats are uncomfortable, you do get a pretty view of the action going on the field.
Another thing about Sun Devil Stadium that bugs me is its food selection. There is a lack of variety and most of it is overpriced. Unlike other stadiums that have a wide selection, Sun Devil Stadium only seems to offer the basics. These basics include hot dogs, peanuts, popcorn, chicken sandwiches, ice cream, sodas, and beers. In my opinion, their menu would be comparable to what you'd find at a high school game plus beer.
However if I was to say anything good about Sun Devil, it would be its ticket prices. Compared to other teams in the NFL, the prices are less than the average. The average price of a ticket goes for 35 to 40 dollars. That's not bad considering some teams average 45 dollars a ticket.
To conclude, if the Cardinals organization continues to use Sun Devil Stadium as its playing venue, not only will attendance continue to drop, but who knows, LA just might have a team again!!!!!!!!
THANK YOU
