| riverpirate's Full Review: Sun Devil Stadium |
It's always a contentious subject, but it's not accurate to say that new stadiums are a guarantee of being a flop after the first year or so. Take a look at places like Cleveland (Jacobs Field), Toronto (Skydome), and Indianapolis (the RCA Dome and Conseco Fieldhouse). All of those cities, generally smaller markets when it comes to sports, have been very successful because they built a new stadium and built it correctly. All three teams (Indians, Bluejays, and Colts) were dreadful until the new stadium came in. Yes, the revenues spiked in the first few years, but the ownership of the team spent that windfall wisely and used it to build a strong nucleus.
Phoenix is a good sports town, and the influx of cash could kick-start the Cardinals into a contending franchise. They already have a good young nucleus on offense, and there's no reason they can't be successful. But there's also a real danger that the Cardinals, like the Vikings, may be successful in a city with more interest in professional football than Phoenix. Just ask Los Angeles.
