| adonna's Full Review: BBC America |
If you're trying to get me to do anything Friday evenings, forget it, at least this month (April). I'm watching Red Dwarf on BBC America.
A new home, new cable channels
I've just moved recently, and am using a different cable system than I had before. On it, are channels I hadn't been exposed to in the past. One, BBC America, is the Full Monty.
Oh, it may be more than that, but right now I'm enjoying BBC America for its collection of British comedies. You know the kind, over the top, very crazy, fun, but decidedly lowbrow. True, they had them on public TV occasionally (Red Dwarf they used to have on San Jose's public TV Channel when they were doing pledge breaks), but here's a channel which has them all the time, and even has some of the newer ones, such as British Men Behaving Badly. Decidedly lowbrow would be an understatement for this show, but it definitely gives a laugh, or a groan, or a bit of both.
In TV stations, programming is everything. I haven't seen BBC America long enough to notice its warts and pimples, but I'm sure they are there. (For instance, I never like it when my programs are interrupted by commercials.) What I have noticed is an enjoyable mix of programs originally broadcast on the BBC, that present a refreshing change from the usual cable fare. True, it has programs in their syndication cycle, but they aren't programs I saw as a kid, at least not in California. In programming, novelty is important.
If you like Absolutely Fabulous (and who wouldn't?) or Red Dwarf, or Blackadder, or any number of great or simply entertaining shows, and you have the opportunity to have BBC America on your cable lineup, give it a try. It's keeping me captivated.
