Like movies? Who doesn’t? Encore is a great cable channel for you. Encore, like HBO and Showtime, is a cable channel that airs movies. The main difference is that Encore is strictly movies whereas HBO and Showtime have some original TV programming. You can also expect Encore to have a lot of older movies.
The average age seems to be a lot older than other movie channels. The movies for the week of February 6, 2005, include Sister Act 2, Finding Nemo, Curse of the Pink Panther, Tremors, The Blob and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. As you can see, some are recent and some go way back.
Also, you can expect movies to repeat a lot. Finding Nemo is scheduled to appear three times for the week of the sixth. (It’s actually set to air twice on the same day.) Also, if you catch the tail end of a movie that you want to see, just wait for the credits to start. Once the credits begin to roll, Encore will display the next airdate if it’s going to be playing it soon.
The high average age and the high number of reruns seems to have earned the channel it’s name. However, a lot of the movies are pretty good. I liked Jackie Brown and Finding Nemo. Had I not seen either of those, I’d consider watching.
The thing that I like about Encore is the density of movies. What it lacks in variety it makes up for in number. I had actually planned to tune in to Encore to watch a movie a day so I could review it, but it seemed as though the channel played a lot of movies that I had already seen. This works both ways, though, since there are a lot of reviews that I’ve written that I need to rewrite due to an average rating of Somewhat Helpful. After I post this review, I’m going to look through the TV section of my newspaper, which lists the movies by channel, and see if any of the movies playing are ones that I need to redo. Encore is worth three stars. It’s not really that good, but it’s not really that bad, either. Encore is the type of product that the three-star rating was meant for – average.
