| jdt2000's Full Review: Alaska Airlines |
I must admit, I haven't had the opportunity to fly a whole lot, but when I do I almost always fly Horizon and Alaska Airlines. For those who don't know, Horizon is a partner company to Alaska. Horizon, a regional carrier, flies into the smaller communities, which makes air travel much easier.
While I was home for Christmas I saw an advertisement for special spring air fare to all of Horizon and Alaska's destinations. I had plans to come home (from college) for Spring break, so I decided to fly Horizon. The fare was quite a deal, Seattle to Eugene round-trip was just around $100.
My flights, to and from Eugene, we uneventful and very relaxing. I left Sea-tac Airport in the evening, a little late because the plane arrived late from its last destination. But we made up time in the air and only arrived around 20 minutes late.
As for Service on both flights, it was excellent. Horizon's flight attendants always seem to be friendly. Despite the short flight, about an hour, the flight attendants always give the full service of snacks. Every time I've flown Horizon, I've had a different snack. This time I had mixed nuts on one flight and a special Hawaiian mixture of nuts on the other flight. The other thing I love about Horizon is the flight attendants always give me a whole can of pop to drink (I don't even have to ask for it) instead of the little plastic cup full.
Horizon has two different style planes, a turbo-jet (a.k.a. prop-jet) these planes are not as loud as one would think. This plane ride can actually be quieter. The other style of plane is a F-28 jet. Horizon is in the process of updating their fleet with a bigger style turbo-jet along with a bigger F-28 style jet. Along with a newer fleet, Horizon continues to fly to many destinations across the Northwest and west coast. From Walla Walla, Washington; to the big city of L.A., and even little North Bend, Oregon.
On my return trip to Seattle I arrived to the Eugene Airport about 40 minutes ahead of flight time. As I was arriving an announcement was made about a canceled flight. So needless to say, there was quite a line at the check-in counter. I got through the line and made my flight on time, so no worries there.
It is here that Horizon's safety code must be examined. I give high regards to Horizon for their safety efforts. It turns out that the flight which was canceled, was so because of problems with the stairs on the airplane (passengers walk down the inside of the door on this style of plane). The minor problem was something that could have been avoided by putting a ramp up to the aircraft. But Horizon Safety officials said they could not do this in case of an emergency (after the passengers were on). So while it seemed an inconvenience, it just shows how good this little airline is. They care about all their passengers. If they were another airline, they may have loaded the plane despite the problems, then something would have happened and people would have been injured.
Horizon is a great little airline. Friendly people, great service, so many destinations, and just so much fun to fly.
