| TRAVELJAM's Full Review: American Airlines |
I have heard a lot of negative things about American, but never tried them myself until last week. I was pleasantly surprised! Every single person was friendly to us, from the counter to the flight attendants. But we didn't have a "normal" experience on this flight.
We got on the plane, and I thought I was in the twilight zone! Why? Because I actually had ROOM for my knees! INCHES of room! Not centimeters! I couldn't believe it! I don't think I have ever been able to stretch my legs on any of my flights. I think I like this already......
Well, we had to sit on the plane for an hour before taking off, due to a mechanical problem. Meanwhile, a row back, there was a group of teenage boys who made my blood boil. What happened? I will tell you! And the key part of this is how American Airlines handled the situation.
From the moment these boys set foot on the plane, they had a mission. A mission to humilate and disrespect everyone within sight of them. I am a young person myself (20's) so it's not that there is a "generation gap" here. They were downright bullies.
They began with yelling loudly, "Someone REEKS on this plane! Oh, it's those old people in front of us! Gross, I'm gonna be sick" , etc. The couple in front of them were directly across from me. Very nice looking, well dressed and completely humiliated! I felt like I wanted to cry for them. They did not smell by the way. Not that that mattered.
So the couple moved, and another unlucky couple sat in their place. The man bumped his head and they boys roared with exaggerated laughter, and made fun of him. Some man walked by and they said "Nice hair, geek!" Then they went up to their other friend's seat in first class, came back and yelled, "I feel so sorry for John, he is sitting to the UGLIEST guy in the world! I was about to puke when I looked at him, I mean he is so *ing ugly!"
Then they thought it would be really cool to put their fingers in the airblowers and make them screech as loud as possible. The man in front of them told them that he was going to have a quiet flight, and to stop doing that. They started in on him, the F word peppered throughout, and it erupted into a huge fight with threats.
The last straw was when the lady directly behind me, who was traveling alone with two small children, was attacked. They started yelling that they hated kids, and that if they heard them, they would hit the little girls. And that they would make their mom hit them too.
I was either going to rip their tongue rings out myself or get someone else involved. So I informed the flight attendant. She said they would not put up with that garbage, and she went to inform the Captain! I scooted back to my seat so I could watch the show! The pilot immediately came back their, and pulled no punches with the ugly brats.
He told them that he wasn't going to put up with so much as a peep out of them. He informed them that he had a solution to the problem, and did they want him to inforce it? No sir, they said. He reemed them a new one, and said that he didn't care if they were in the air, if they said anything to anyone, he would take care of it! They promised to behave. They did too! We didn't hear a sound out of them the whole 5 hours!
The flight attendants gave all of us around them free beer and drinks, and treated us with extra care. Giggling, they asked me to relay what the Captain had said to the boys, since they didn't hear. We laughed at the fact that 5 minutes later, the hoodlums were sound asleep, mouths hanging open. I said they were foolish to go to sleep after they insulted so many people.
So, flight attendants and Captain to the rescue. They made sure that our right to have a safe, unintimidating flight was imposed. They took care of us all, and tended to the bullies.
The food wasn't great, but no airline is consistent with that. Like I said before, the leg room was luxurious! I will definitely fly American again, and I look forward to it.
