Okay, so I was expecting the worst. I'm a very picky traveler. If I have to sit in between strangers, or by the window, I have a fit, but I won't bore you with the rest of my traveling "wills and wonts". I wanted to buy a ticket on Northwest or worse yet America West...even Sun Country in order to avoid this experience of flying stand-by on an airline I knew nothing about. But, there was no talking my partner into it, since her mom works for Midwest Express and was giving us "Buddy Passes" (almost free tickets for family of employees!)
When we arrived at the ticket counter with luggage in tow, there was a line about 10 deep. We considered just skipping it and going to the gate, carrying on our luggage. About 4 or 5 minutes later, we reached the front and stood before a most pleasant gate agent, who cheerfully told us that even though we were flying stand-by,we could give him our luggage...he was certain there would be a seat for us.
So onward we trudged, less our two suitcases. We arrived at the gate and found several people in line, who were also cheerfully and respectfully being served. My anticipation mounted as I heard the man in front of me arranging for an aisle seat.....MY aisle seat. We reached the front, and since we were flying on "discount" tickets, I asked in my most pleasant traveler's voice if we could please have 2 seats together...and threw in that I would looove an aisle, of course, only if it's possible.
When we arrived on the plane, I saw rows of 2 seats on either side of the plane. They were leather and spacious with plenty of legroom. As I allowed my eyes to scan the rest of the plane, I thought, 'Wow! This plane has a large 1st-class section. It was then that I realized......every seat was spacious and leather....and every row only had 2 seats! I was instantly at ease and prepared for a very positive flying experience.
We left San Francisco on-time and shortly thereafter our flight crew busily prepared for the meal service that was provided. Many flights that I have been on that were far longer in travel time hardly provided a bag of peanuts much less a full meal.
They started serving the food in the front and since I was in the back, I was wondering what all the "clanking" was about. My god! It was people "dining"....with real dishes! There was no choice in meals, which was fine with me. My plate arrived with a lovely looking pasta salad, various cold cuts, focaccia bread, tomatoes and cucumbers, fresh fruit and a wine glass. The presentation was excellent. (Okay, if that meal came to me in a five star restaurant, I would call it mediocre...but on an airplane, it was A-OK!) I do have to say that the pasta salad, as great as it looked, was rather bland. But the sandwich that I made with the focaccia, veggies and coldcuts was more than good, and I finished my meal in good spirits. Which reminds me, they serve a glass of complimentary wine with each meal, for those who wish. After the meal, they passed out warm (fresh from the microwave) chocolate chip cookies. Very tasty!
Most everyone on the in-flight crew was very professional and accommodating. One young lady wasn't exactly the nicest, but she wasn't particularly rude either. Just kind of, well, blah.
We arrived to Milwaukee about 15 minutes early. From our seats, we watched the crew of many unload our luggage efficiently and properly.
I exited the plane in the best mood I've been in, after flying, in a very, very long time.
We brought my "mother-in-law" some chocolates from Ghiradelli Square in San Francisco as a thank-you for the tickets. In retrospect, she deserves a whole lot more!
