| smagoun's Full Review: Northwest Airlines |
Northwest was the first airline to bring jet service to my hometown. No longer did I have to fly in and out of town on the tiny, hamster-powered puddle jumpers that regional airlines are so fond of. The jets (DC9s) became immensely popular almost overnight, and Northwest made a small fortune on ticket sales. I flew exclusively on Northwest because they were convenient, comfortable, relatively affordable and went where I needed to go. Life was good. Since then, I've switched airlines (to Midwest Express) and now gladly take the puddle jumper out of town.
Northwest is still the only major airline to fly jets to my hometown, but the quality of service is bad enough that I gladly choose the much more uncomfortable alternatives. Northwest was actually doing pretty well in the early 90's (number one in on-time performance, decent customer service, etc.). Since then they've become terrible in just about every area that matters. Nearly 75% of the flights I've taken on Northwest since 1995 have been delayed or canceled. That number sounds ridiculously high, and it is. I might as well take Amtrak; at least my bags won't end up in the wrong country.
(yup, you guessed it - baggage handling is not the airline's forté).
The food is bad, too. I won't get into that - most airlines have terrible food.
Finally, the customer service representatives I've been in contact with over the years have been pleasant enough but incompetent or powerless (or both). Not too impressive...
I'm sure that other people have had pleasant experiences with Northwest, but I have been consistently underwhelmed.
