| pgr91's Full Review: Disney Magic |
Nobody does entertainment like Disney. It was a great week at sea.
However, it was marred by missing on board credits increasing my total costs by $600, and guest services / the purser's office were arrogant, dismissive, and completely unhelpful. They also hide behind the teenagers they staff at the front desk, taking requests in writing and replying by voice mail. Ultimately, they acknowledged the mistake but refused to correct it, saying the cruise was "still a good value." Where I come from, changing the deal after the passengers board the boat is a pretty big problem.
The events of 9/11 have also caused a few problems. Boarding the boat involved nightmarishly long and slow lines. (It didn't help that we came in on the redeye.) Security is tough everywhere, but Disney are the crowd control geniuses - they could do a lot better.
Plumbing was surprisingly weak. Sometimes the toilets don't flush. Disney counseled patience, but I'm not really comfortable walking away from an unflushed toilet. The Rainforest Room at the spa is nifty but overpriced at $50, so it was very disappointing to find it out of commission on our last day. DO NOT DRINK THE WATER IN YOUR BATHROOM - it is for washing only, and it sometimes runs brown at first.
The dress code is remarkably confusing, and we didn't bring the right clothes. You'll be in Lumiere's 2 or 3 nights, jacket requested. There are 2 formal nights, jacket requested. And you may book a night or 2 in Palo's (the adult alternative restaurant) which is also - you guessed it - jacket requested. The brochure touted casual dining, but I needed a dinner jacket 5 of my 7 nights.
Many of the best items go first. Experienced Disney cruisers plan to arrive at noon to be first on the boat, and spend their first few hours running from Palo's to the spa to guest services, booking champagne brunches, afternoon teas, adult dinners, wine tastings, spa treatments and salon appointments. A first timer could be seriously disappointed.
