I am a travel agent, and early in 1999 a couple of clients of mine booked a cruise through the Panama Canal on NCL. They deposited in October and were given a cabin assignment. They were due to leave at the end of March 2000.
March 16th, I received a voice mail message at the office that simply stated that my clients were being given a displacement notice. What does this mean? Well it means that NCL had over booked and my clients were the ones who were chosen to be “bumped.” NCL had sold more cabins than that were available and now they had to “get rid of a few.”
NCL does not displace people on first come first served basis. They do it randomly. Even though my clients pre-booked, deposited and had been given all their travel arrangements (including air travel and other arrangements that they will be penalized for canceling) nothing was awarded to them except the following:
* They get a full refund (you think?)
* They get a cruise for 50% off their next cruise, good for one year (you can find this advertised almost at any time through most travel agencies)
They were not offered any other perks that other cruise lines offer, such as:
* Future upgrades
* Shipboard credits
Plus the 50% off
This displacement was non-negotiable and my clients were simply “out of luck.” Before you decide to book with NCL, please be aware, that no matter how much you pay, or how early you book, you may be bumped (someone always is!). Because this is a common practice of NCL, my agency refuses to book any other vacations through NCL. I recommend you do the same! Be aware!
