| EM1026's Full Review: Windjammer Yankee Clipper |
This was my second Barefoot cruise, and I enjoyed it even more than the first (on the Polynesia). We arrived in Grenada on the 31st of December. There was a windjammer representative at the airport to greet us, and get a special rate on the cab to the ship, $7 US per person, not bad. Checking in with the purser was quick and easy while our bags were taken to our cabins for us. We were then shown our cabins by one of the stewards. They had a buffet dinner set up for us weary travellers. We also had the option of going to the New Years party on the Mandalay which was anchored nearby. The party included a band, food and free champagne at midnight.
In the morning, after a buffet breakfast, we had the option of taking a guided tour of the island, or catching some rays on the top deck. We set sail for Bequia at 1:00 after lunch. The tradition of playing "Amazing Grace" as the sails go up is breathtaking. You can help hoist the sails, or just sit back and watch. The captain weighed anchor for dinner, and a good nights sleep. We set sail again at 4am, and arrived in Bequia mid morning. Your day is what you make of it, tour, exploring the town on your own, the beach (beautiful), dinner ashore, or on the boat. Next day was Mayreau. Tiny island with more sheep than people. Lunch on the beach, BBQ dinner on the beach, and a pub crawl (if you so desire) that night. We sailed through the night and awoke in the Tobago Cays, a small cluster of uninhabited island, with great snorkeling, beautiful beaches, and clear blue water. Again, your day is what you make of it.
About the boat, it is an old sailing vessel, not a floating hotel. Cabins are small, but efficient, and who wants to spend time in a cabin when you are sailing through the Caribbean? Sailing can be a bit rough at times, but Cpt. Neil likes to anchor at night so you can get some rest. As well as the island tours and beaches, there is usually some sort of activity on board, costume party, crab races, and treasure hunts.
You will not starve aboard this ship. It all starts at 6am (if you're up), with bloody marys and muffins. Breakfast is from 7-8:30, usually sit down. Don't worry if you over sleep, they leave food out for the late risers. Buffet lunch at noon, happy hour with snacks and complimentary rum drinks at 5, dinner at 7 or 8, and "midnight" snacks at 10pm, don't ask me why.
This is truly a casual, laid back, fun cruise. Go barefoot all day, get dressed for dinner, if you want. There is a wide mix of people on the ship, and you quickly meet, and make friends with the other passengers. The Captain and the crew are very friendly, and they do everything they can to make your trip the best it can be. I went with the whole family, although, I would recommend this cruise for couples, friends, and singles.
