Describe your trip. What time of year did you travel?
My husband and I went to Culebra from December27, 2000 to December 31st, 2000.
What did you love or hate about it?
This island is not for the party going crowd or Ritz Carlton vacationers. It is mainly for people who are looking to rest on the most beautiful beach they have ever laid their eyes on. This is a quite island. There is not too much to do except water sports (diving, snorkeling) and going to the beach. There are no jet skis causing noise pollution as you enjoy your day. Generally, local Puerto Ricans travel from the main land to enjoy this piece of paradise. There are no large hotels and therefore, only a small number of tourists that come here; so the beaches are still unspoiled and the streets and beaches are free of debris.
What did you love or hate about it?
With the lack of commercialism comes lack of competition. The cost to rent a bicycle was US15/day and even then there were problems with the brakes. I also heard the same from a friend who rented a car for US$50/day, and the car didn't start due to a bad battery. This lack of competition also extends to the restaurants. The cost per main menu is about US$15 (Chicago restaurant prices) but without the Chicago restaurant service or decor.
What would you do differently next time?
Next time, I will stay longer and stay at a lodge which had a kitchens and preferable a deck in the back. Therefore, I could cook my dinners and enjoy eating it in the warm summer night.
For whom would you recommend this trip?
I do not recommend this place for everyone. There is not much to do at night except eat dinner and go for a nice stroll. The few bars there chart city prices for drinks and it gets old after 2 days. This is also not the place to go if you're looking to get pampered.
But if you just want to relax where there are beautiful beaches, diving/snorkeling, great weather, and laid back atmosphere. Then this is the place for you.

When you visit, remember that this is a small island. If you take the ferry (US$2.50/per person) then bring as much as you can with you. There is a great camping ground next to Flamingo beach. Go to the Kmart on Highway 3 and stock up on water, liquor, igloo container, chips etc before getting on the ferry. If you're going during high season, go to www.culebra.org; book your lodging and any scuba trips before hand. And if possible, bring your own bicycle. It makes a big difference having some mobility.
