I was fortunate enough to recently have the opportunity to spend three days in this little bit of paradise called Bruges. It is like stepping back in time to medieval days, with its beautiful old homes, lovely quaint hotels, winding canals, and even a few swans, if you are lucky enough to spot one. Walking arm in arm along the wonderful old cobblestone streets by the water and crossing the tiny centuries-old bridges in the early evening is a memory I will always cherish. This was by far the most romantic town I have yet discovered.
During the day, of course, like every other beautiful spot , there are many tourists, after all, I am one of them! But many come just for a day trip from larger cities nearby. In fact, we met two women on the train who were going there on a day trip from Paris, which was about three hours each way. But in the early evening, with the day-trippers gone, the town takes on a calm and serene glow. The soft lights reflected in the canals gives a truly magical charm to the town.
We stayed at Die Swaene Hotel, which looks right onto one of the canals. The rooms were lovely, as was the entire hotel. The hotel requires having dinner one night in its beautiful gourmet restaurant. Since it was an incredible meal, served in a gorgeous dining room, with impeccable service, this was no hardship! They were featuring a five course meal, all with the wonderful white spring asparagus that was featured everywhere this time of year, as some part of the course,often just as a garnish. They were even featuring asparagus -flavored ice cream for dessert, but since I am not that adventurous and I take my desserts seriously, the chef prepared especially for my husband and myself cherries jubilee.
This was a visit I will always remember with the fondest memories...how can you not adore a town whose largest lake is referred to as the Lake of Love?
