Ever wanted to hang out with the Beatles, share a bottle of French wine with Gerard Depardieu, kick a soccer ball with Pele, flex your muscles with Arnold Schwarzenegger, scare the hell out of Alfred Hitchcock, talk about your next adventure with Indiana Jones, discuss the state of the world with 007, debate foreign policy with Winston Churchill, inform Vladimir Lenin on how communism affected the world 76 years after his death, take a punch at Muhammad Ali, or confess your love to Marilyn Monroe? Then perhaps you'll be interested in visiting Madame Tussaud's wax museum where you can find all of these celebrities and many others in one place. And don't forget to use your imagination, 'cause they tend not to say anything. But, I'm sure they can hear you.
Photography galore!!! Everyone who has a camera takes pictures! The most photographed figure in the museum is...Arnold Schwarzenegger. He has one unfair advantage, though. He stands right in the beginning of the museum, and staff members take your picture with a professional camera. By the time you're finished with your tour, your picture is ready, and you can purchase it for a hefty price. After your picture with Arnold, you proceed to the Garden Party. Relax. Have a seat next to Gerard Depardieu. He knows English, though like some other French, he prefers not to speak it. Well, I couldn't squeeze a word out of him, even with a bottle of wine on the table. The Garden Party is pretty big, and you'll see many famous people there. Dress appropriately.
Save your strength, because you're about to hang out with sports legends in the next area of the museum. Are you ready to challenge Muhammad Ali? Don't forget to bring your boxing gloves. Soccer fans would appreciate a photo opportunity with Cantona and Klinsmann, as well as with the king of soccer--Pele. Figure skating lovers may get some tips from Britain's most famous ice-dancing couple--Torville & Dean.
History buffs would love the next area of the museum--200 Years. Instead of eating Napoleon cake and drinking Napoleon brandy, why not meet the man himself, and explain to him what changes you would like to see in the recipe formula, if any. While you are at it, perhaps you'd like to share your thoughts on why it was a mistake to attack Russia in 1812. Duke of Wellington, Jerry Hall, and many other historical figures are all in attendance.
Hollywood Legends and Superstars section is like an after-Oscar party, only better. James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) and Indiana Jones, Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor are all attending the get-together. They don't mind you photographing them, but no one is willing to sign an autograph. James Bond is showing off his Walter PPK pistol after drinking his vodka-martini. Take it easy with him.
Proceed to the Grand Hall, where you are about to meet important political figures. Say Hello to Saddam Hussein. I did. Unfortunately, he wasn't in a mood to talk. He seemed like a cool guy, though. He just needs to practice English more often. I also stopped by to see how Vladimir Lenin was doing. Hmm, he looked pretty darn good for a 123 (at the time) year old guy. I made him speechless when I told him about the fate of communism in the former Soviet Union.
Be afraid, be very afraid! You are entering the Chamber of Horrors--500 years of crime and punishment--including the French Revolution, Victorian London and 20th century serial killers. The settings, the lights, the sounds, the atmosphere is...scary. Torture, agony and death are all around. This is the home of Jack the Ripper and Vlad the Impaler (better known as Dracula).
Madame Tussaud's wax museum in London is an interesting and very popular place. In the summer, be prepared to spend over 1 1/2 hours standing in a queue before getting in. Given the number of worthy attractions that London has to offer, it's certainly not a must-see. But if you are planning to spend more than a couple of days in London, I recommend that you consider this museum. You are likely to have fun there.
If you would like to visit Madame Tussaud's museum, but cannot make it to London, you have several alternatives. There are similar Madame Tussaud's wax museums (on a smaller scale) in Amsterdam, Las Vegas, and coming up in the summer of 2000--New York.
