Opinion Summary
2 hours 25 minutes in Amsterdam
by AlexG | Feb 23 '00
Pros: Little time, but the train from the airport leaves you right in the middle of the city. A sense of adventure.
Cons: Somewhat risky--make sure you don't miss your train back to the airport

day trip to london is very possible (Reply to this comment)

this review starts off correctly stating that london, amsterdam, and some other city that i forget are common stopovers when flying into europe. where he's mistaken is in stating that if london (presumably lhr) is your layover, then you should just stay at the airport. this is incorrect advice for a couple reasons. one, lhr is a horrible place to spend the day. two, with the underground available directly into the heart of london from the airport (a little over an hour to hammersmith, a little longer to say leicester square or piccadilly), there's no reason not to go into the city - if your layover is long enough. many is a time that i've flown into london from the u.s., arriving around 7 in the morning, checked my luggage into the left luggage counter and jumped the underground into the city, getting to leicester square around 9 (depends on how long the wait at baggage reclaim is, line at the underground ticket machine, etc.). if you book you connecting flight to leave late in the afternoon or early evening, you have the whole day to shop, visit museums, maybe even take in a matinee at a west end theatre.

Nerves of steel... (Reply to this comment)

It has happened to me quite a few times that I decided that sightseeing was more important than hanging around the airport. (For example, in Tokyo:)

And it has also happened to me a few times that I had to run like crazy to make my flight. Oh well, you live and learn, I guess... Nothing to get your adrenaline going during a long day of travelling than almost missing your flight because you took a risk...

5 and a half hours in Vienna (Reply to this comment)

Great review! I once had a 5 and a half hour layover in Vienna and took the opportunity to take in a few coffee houses and the cathedral. Got to suck the marrow out of life, eh? Luckily I didn't have to rush as much as you did though.

Amsterdam is awesome.... (Reply to this comment)

...and one of my favorite cities in Europe. I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one nutty enough to try to squeeze the juice out of 2 1/2 hours on a layover. And why is it always the last gate? I've been in that situation countless times, but never for an international flight. Thanks, the review was fun. - kifwebe

I was exhausted after reading your review! Is your next review going to be "1 hour in Berlin"?!

Great story, BTW.
