Pros: Beautiful beaches, good food, music that moves the soul, the warmest people on earth.
Cons: Not many English/Spanish speakers. Guides are very useful.
The Bottom Line: Salvador is great--There's something for everyone. We stayed at a resort which was great for kids but for young singles I recommend getting out into the City itself.

| den2u02's Full Review: Salvador da Bahia |
I was a bit worried about my first trip to Brazil and being in Salvador, especially after reading reviews on line which talked about crime and poverty. So I went to Salvador a bit skeptical as to what I would encounter. To my surprise, it was the most beautiful place I could imagine. Having traveled across the globe, Europe, South East Asia, the Caribbean and Mexico, I felt this place had it all. Salvador is definitely a place you fall in love with. It's full of history, culture, music, dance, rhythm and soul. It's a place that's full of life and love. You feel the warmth of its people and you are embraced regardless of race, color or language barriers.
Yes, Portuguese is indeed the language spoken here and being a bit naive, I thought I could get by easily with the little bit of Spanish I spoke-Not the case at all. English is not widely spoken unless you count the desk clerks at the larger hotels--it does not stop the locals from communicating but it can be a bit of a barrier.
If you go into Salvador/Pelhorino, esp at night, I highly recommend getting a guide. I was fortunate enough to encounter an excellent, reliable and affordable guide who made my family's vacation there an amazing experience. He spoke excellent English in addition to four other languages, including Japanese. If you are an English speaker in search of a guide I highly recommend Pedro, (you can email me for the contact info den2u02@yahoo.com).
Renting a car is a must, esp if you want to see all that the City has to offer, however the roads can be difficult to navigate esp if you are not used to driving there ( which you're probably not) or are used to driving a manual/stick shifts--there were no automatic drives available--thus having a guide who drove us around really came in handy.
Salvador is simply gorgeous, full of untouched beaches, great food, the most wonderful people and beautiful sights. It's definitely a must see!!! Denise
