| Maja's Full Review: Salvador da Bahia |
Salvador is one of the coolest cities I got to visit when I was in Brazil. It has so much history and so much pizzazz. (Note to the person who said Baianos were lazy: They're not lazy, they're just extremely laid back compared to the hurried Paulista or Carioca. It's like the difference between your typical Southerner and Yankee in the US. Same thing. )
There are many aspects to Salvador beginning with the one thing that I really think about when I think of Brazil : music. There are a lot of cool shows in Salvador, simply because it is the heart of African Music in Brazil. Those bands really know how to get a crowd moving too. I went to an Olodum show back when I have never even heard of them. It was AWESOME! They had seven or eight huge drums and it was like they picked up your heart and started beating it for you, all you want to do is dance.
I have to hand it to the Brazilians for being the coolest famous people around too. The guys from Terrasamba were there and they were so nice. They took lots of pictures with fans and were having a great time talking with everybody. I got to hang out with Carlos Malta and Pife Moderno, along with Cascabulho a few weeks ago when they were in town for Jazzfest and they were so much fun.
The historic district was recently fixed up and it is absolutely breathtaking. I remember this one street that sticks out in my mind that really represents Salvador to me. It was in the historic district and all the buildings on the street were different colors, all vibrant, with a slightly different style to each one. It represents Salvador in that the music and the culture is so vibrant, and so diverse, yet everybody celebrates their diversity together.
Salvador has an amazing array of churches and if you've never been to Brazil let me tell you these churches are gorgeous. When you walk in the walls are lined with gold and everything shimmers. It gives you a very majestic feeling.
The streets of Salvador are really cool becasue as most Brazilian "hill" cities, they don't build around the hills they build right on them, which I loved about the cities. It gives it real character. Narrow streets running up and down hills. It's a very lived in city with little parks and neat African stores and a huge Reggae influence.
It is also home of the great Northeast food such as Feijoada, a kind of black bean stew with pork and sausage in it (it's good stuff). They also make a lot of yummy desserts like doce de leite (milk candy) and caramelized bananas, and all the many different kinds of decadent mousse you can possibly imagine.
Salvador is a great place to party as is any city in Brazil, but most of all it has a lot to offer in the way of music, food, religion, and culture. There is always something going on whether it be bands playing in the streets, Carnaval, parades, or craft fairs, Salvador is a lively city with very laid back, fun loving habitants.
