We visited Bermuda in June, and left this wonderful destination with an understanding that Bermuda offers more than beautiful clean pink sand beaches, clear turquoise waters, a heaven for scuba divers, a wonderful climate, and most importantly, very friendly people.
We visited one of the most unique sites on Bermuda called Crystal Caves. We walked into this cave and across a floating pontoon bridge and witnessed stalactites and stalagmites that were formed millions of years ago. An admission is charged for Crystal Caves, and I highly recommend every visitor to Bermuda see this magnificent natural wonder.
There are many places to enjoy bird watching such as Spittal Pond Nature Preserve, Paget Marsh, Admiralty House Park, Arboretum, Blue Hole Park, Devonshire Marsh, Hog Bay Park, and many others on acres and acres of unspoiled preserves. Some of the birds we saw were cardinals, doves, egrets, flamingos, fork-tailed flycatchers, herons, kiskadees, longtails, petrels, terns, and many others. If you are into bird watching, I recommend contacting the Bermuda Audubon Society on the island for the best and easiest places to get to for bird watching.
The Bermuda Railway Museum is another interesting, free thing to do on the island. There is an 18 mile trail that spans the length of the island and is great for walking and bicycling. There are seven segments of the Railway Trail to explore, and we were rewarded with seeing drawbridges, lighthouses, nature reserves, palmetto groves and swamplands.
We enjoyed snorkeling at Snorkel Park at the Royal Navy Dockyard in Sandy's Parish. There were marked snorkel trails, and we observed live coral and many different forms of sea life. There is an admission charge to get into Snorkel Park. Devil's Hole is a natural aquarium where we saw eels, fish, sharks and turtles. There is also an admission charge for Devil's hole.
For the horseback rider, walking pace tours on bridle paths and waterfront trails are available, which will give you a different perspective of Bermuda. Ask at your hotel where you can hook up to take a horseback ride on the beach.
The Bermuda Perfumery & Gardens near Bailey's Bay is another free thing to see and tour on the island. This perfumery has been operating since 1929. We observed the process in the art of making these wonderful fragrances. There is a small nature trail here to see frangipani, hibiscus, oleanders, passion flowers, roses, and other wonderful scented plants and flowers. If you are an orchid lover you will love the number of specimens of orchids in these gardens.
As you can see, there are plenty of things to see and do on Bermuda other than chill on the beautiful pink sand beaches and marvel on this pristine island.
