When I went to Nova Scotia, I decided to get as far away from civilization as possible. I guess that is a result of living in Manhattan. And, I think that I found a near perfect place to escape to.
The village of White Point is situated near the top of Cape Breton in northern Nova Scotia. White point has a population on 70 people. The three basic things to do here are hike (or walk) along the rugged coastline, go whale watching or enjoy the best seafood chowder that you can imagine (actually in the next town). White point is about a 6 hour drive from the Halifax Airport.
There is a piece of land in White Point that dramatically stretches out into the ocean. It is grassy on top with incredibly rugged rocky edges. The colorful lobster boats add to the charm. As you enter the town, the road curves left towards the small harbor. At the Two Tittles Bed & Breakfast, stay to the right and enter a dirt road. After just a few feet, the dirt roads widens and you can park your car there. It is a 15 minute walk out to the amazing spit of land. Bring your camera. You can also follow the trail around to the right along the coast if you want to take a longer walk. After days of hiking in Nova Scotia, I decided that this is my favorite place. The location does lack any serious exertion.
After your walk it is time to search for whales. Head back to the Two Tittles Bed & Breakfast and knock on the door. You will notice there is also a sign for White Point Whale Cruises. This is not a commercial whale tour. Rather, Cyril, the owner of the B&B will take you out on his boat. We saw plenty of Minke Whales the day we went out. Cyril is also full of insight into the area since his family has be in White Point for many generations. He charges C$25 (US$17) per person for 2 hours or so. It is great to have a captain the seems to enjoy the whales as much as you do.
Now, for the chowder, you must head to the town of Neil's Harbour. It is only a few miles away. There you will find a small self-service restaurant called the Chowder House. You can sit inside or outside. The seafood chowder is rich and full of chunks of fish, lobster, clams, potatoes and mussels. The clam chowder has a slightly stronger flavor and is filled with whole clams.
This area of Cape Breton is magical and out of the way. We loved it so much that we found other places to "busy", so we headed back to this area and stayed at the Two Tittles Bed & Breakfast. Eating breakfast looking out of a huge window, facing the harbor, was a truly wonderful way to start the day. Rooms are only C$60 (US$41) a night including a full breakfast.
The telephone number for both Two Tittles Bed & Breakfast and White Point Whale Cruises is (902) 383-2817.
