LAID-BACK! Thats the best way to describe Rarotonga,Cook Islands. This is the place for total relaxation.
I have been to Rarotonga seven times in the last ten years and lived there for up to two years at one time.
Things to do outdoors:
Paul Moate'
4 by 4 trucks and motorbikes.
I highly recommend this!Even if the weather turns bad he still does the rides in the rain.(Personally I had more fun in the rain)This is relatively cheap to.Approx.$NZ50.00for the truck rides over the mountain and for the more adventurous I recommend the 4 wheel motorbikes.Approx.$NZ40.00 This includes a trip up to the local waterfall.
Surfing
If you are a surfer there are numerous locations on the island, but be warned, these are not for the inexperienced surfer. There are alot of "sharp nasties" on the reef!!!
Diving
Speaking of reefs, if you would like a closer look at the reef, there are two or three dive businesses on the island. I can personally recommend the new dive company for learners where you can see the reef from the safety of the lagoon. Ask for them at the PACIFIC RESORT, Muri Beach. Diving over the reef, you can see a huge variety of aquatic life and even a shipwreck.
Plenty more outdoor activities for you such as: cycling around the island (it only takes 45 minutes to drive around the island and thats going at the speed limit of only 40 km/hr!) There is always the motorized way of getting around the island, I recommend a scooter which you can pick up for $100/week rental. Alot of fun.
You definitely must get to see the traditional cultural shows held weekly at various hotels and resorts around the island where you will see local dancing and dress.
If you are into the night scene, there are alot of good quality restaurants with local food as well as foreign food. Unfortunately there are not enough nightclubs on the island, but the ones they do have are quite good. I would give them a 7 out of 10.
In conclusion, I would recommend at least a 2 week holiday, preferably with a friend or partner. Try to get to Rarotonga around the months of June to August. If you have any questions regarding Rarotonga, feel free to e-mail me at: ceaser23@hotmail.com .au
