Now, this is in no way meant to brag, but I have been going to Hawaii almost every year of my life. I have visited the islands of Maui, Oahu, Hawaii, and Kauai. Kauai is, by far, my favorite island. It is the only place I where would actually consider living.
To start, I have to admit that I am sort of a city boy. San Francisco, Seattle, Boston, New York (although I have never lived in the latter). That said, I do not like Oahu simply because it is TOO much like a big city. There are too many people; too many tourists, many of whom do not speak English (its still true, the Japanese own the island).
Anyhow, the big island of Hawaii, for me at least, tends to be too boring, and too big to do things around the island in one day. Maui is a nice mix of city and island, except its generally too damn hot.
That said, my heart will always lie in Kauai. It is always green, and has the most beautiful scenery in the islands. There aren't that many people (some 25,000, I believe) and it is very relaxing. There is a lot to do that I feel is more what I think of as Hawaiian, not so much typical touristy activities.
My favorite is the drive to Ke'e Beach on the north side of the island, with the ultimate in hikes along the Na Pali coast. The first leg of that hike takes you into a secluded waterfall where one can skinny dip. Most importantly though, this hike is a great way to experience some real Hawaii: the flora & fauna.
If you don't like to hike, I also highly recommend taking a trimaran or Zodiac tour along the Na Pali coast. It is a rare adventure to be able to see the island from the ocean. You're likely to see spinner and bottlenose dolphins, and sea turtles. And SCUBA diving is pretty good here, for the Hawaiian islands.
Kauai is an adventure I highly recommend to anyone with the desire to relax and still have some adventure....and anyone who ultimately dislikes tourists.
