OK, let me be the first to admit that this epinion is not based on having stayed in Baltimore for any significant period of time. I have never lived there, I did not go to school there, and I'm not from the East Coast. I also admit that I did not visit a large part of the greater Baltimore area - I never visited the north part of the city, I did not visit John Hopkins University, and I didn't see a baseball game in wonderful Camden Yards. What I did do is stay in downtown Baltimore in April of 1999 for 5 days and my experiences during these 5 days was not very refreshing.
I could talk at length about my bad experiences and frustrations, but I think it may be more effective to just highlight some of them for you:
- The downtown area is not very safe. If you stay in the downtown area, the only direction you can safely walk or drive is north. To the east of downtown is Little Italy which is right next to the Projects. To the west is a very shady area of town. To the south is a more industrialized area of town. The Baltimore convention center, Camdem Yards, and the new PSINet stadium where the Baltimore Ravens play are located in this general area. In my brief stay there, I heard of several stories where tourists were stalked or harassed while walking to and from the convention center to their hotels in the downtown area.
- While the Inner Harbor area is somewhat nice with the views of the harbor (it's nice if you enjoy places like the Planet Hollywood or the Hard Rock Cafe), it has a lot to be desired if you are looking for fine dining or upscale shopping.
- Many of the locals walking around the downtown area seemed a little out of it - like as in wacko, clueless, or on acid. People, in general, were not very friendly.
- Stay away from the theaters just east of the downtown area (the ones next to the Projects). I made the mistake of seeing the Matrix there. Not only was the theater run down, but it also smelled like a homeless shelter. I have since heard that that there was a shooting in the theater last year where someone was killed (maybe that explained the number of police officers that were parked in their squad cars around the building).
I could elaborate further, but I hope I got my message across. If you are staying in the downtown area of Baltimore, be careful. That place is a dump.
