New Year's Eve of Y2K was a glorious time. We'd blown off the threats of computers across the country shutting down, leaving panic-stricken mobs in blackouts throughout the land at the stroke of midnight. Equally ignored was the threat of ragheaded terrorists setting off bombs amidst celebrating throngs of Americans. This was the end of the century, and I had the sexiest woman in Texas, my future bride, at my side. We made that two-hour ride from Houston to Austin for that once-in-a-lifetime bash, and hell or highwater wasn't going to stop us.
To satisfy requirements in keeping the advisor nerds off my tail, we made our customary stop at Buffalo Wild Wings before squeezing through the hordes on Congress and Sixth Street. BWW boasts a whole menu of different sauces for your wings along with a great variety of side dishes for a good price. The sauces range from exotic to scorching, and we chose both ends of the spectrum. My lady took the teriyaki with its sweetish Oriental flavor, and I opted for the Blazing. This is the hottest stuff on the menu, that will cause you to break out in a sweat just remembering the taste. This stuff is meant to be washed down with a pint of beer, that does nothing to affect your driving ability. This sauce burns the alcohol out on contact, y'see. We had some cheese fries to go along with it, and like the wings, BWW gives you a good portion. For less than $20 for two persons, you definitely can't go wrong and owe yourself a treat next time you spot one on your side of town.
With that being said and done, we made our way through the raucous crowd to the corner of Sixth and Congress where a bandstand was blasting away some good old rock and roll, none of that rap crap on this occasion. If you've read my previous reviews, you know that Austin is the party capitol of the Southwest, and there was no other place I would have rather been that night. I made my way to a street lamp where a row of newspaper racks were being bumped and jostled by the partygoers. I climbed atop one of the sturdier ones and managed to pull my lady up alongside me. I did my best Jagger routine in dancing to the music, and got a few bottles of champagne and cognac passed up as a result. Those Texans whooped and hollered as the countdown continued, and, all of a sudden - surprise! It was Y2K, and all the lights were still on. It was the Stanley Cup, the Super Bowl, the World Series, and Wrestlemania all rolled into one, kissing that woman with that mob on Sixth Street at my feet. What a night.
Of course, the world changed after that. I married that gal on St. Patrick's Day. Only months later, some raghead called Osama Bin Laden made his name synonymous with our traditional 911 emergency call, and our new President changed the world as we knew it. It's been a War on Terror ever since, and all of us who were out there bringing in the New Millenium are just glad it didn't start sooner, like on that magic night.
It's been almost seven years, and my lady's a bit older now, more mature, not into those big celebrations and party times. My old workplace in NYC is gone, those Twin Towers just a fond memory. I moved from Texas about four years ago, and the Westport area in KC conjures up other memories of wild and wooly times in Austin. But, hell, there's still BWW, our country's still here and I'm still here. Every day above ground's a grand day, as the Irish say.
And, a big thanks to Bryan Carey for helping us remember the way we were.
