When we were planning our trip to HERSHEY PARK, we actually thought about leaving our almost 4 year old daughter with relatives. We had heard that the park was full of roller coasters, and was mainly geared toward older kids.
We were certainly glad that we did not listen. There are more kiddie rides at Hershey Park than there are at the Magic Kingdom in Disney World. Yes, most of them are midway carnival rides, but my daughter loved them, and we definitely got our $$ worth.
To get the maximum value for your dollar, take advantage of the PARK PREVIEW PLAN. When the park is open until 11:00 PM, if you pre purchase tomorrow's ticket, you are admitted into the park for 3 hours the night before, for free. Or 2 and a half hours if the park closes before 11:00 PM.
Ticket prices are:
Ages 3-9 $17.95.
Ages 9-54 $ 32.95
Ages 55 -69 $17.95
Ages 70+ &13.95
In those few hours, we were able to ride a few rides, and get a good idea of what the Park has to offer. We were able to get a free park map, so that we could plan our next days activities. My daughter could hardly sleep that night, because she was so excited about the next morning!
The next day, we parked our car in the HERSHEY CHOCOLATE SYRUP section of the parking lot, caught the tram, and were off to enjoy to the park, because we had our tickets from the night before, we were able to by pass the long line for tickets, and were were inside the park in a mater of minutes.
Before you enter Hershey Park, you will pass several signs that display different brands of Hershey Chocolate, Stop by these sign if you have kids, beside making a cute picture, they "measure " your kids. Each ride in Hershey Park has a height restriction. Your child will fall into one of the following height ranges: Hershey Kisses, which is up to 41 inches. Reeses cups which is 41 inches to about 46 inches. The other heights, in order are Hershey Chocolate Bar, Twizzler Licorice, and Hershey's Cookies and Creme Bar, Each height is a few inches taller than the other, The kiddie rides fall into the Hershey's Kisses and Reeses cup, and the bigger coaster type rides are in the Hershey's cookies and creme bar height range.
My daughter fell just a half inch short of being able to ride the rides designated as Reese Cups, but there were more than enough rides for our little daredevil to ride.
In Carrousel Circle, she took pictures with several Hershey Character, including a giant Kit Kat Bar, a big silver Hershey's Kiss and a big oversized Hershey bar. There were 8 rides that she could have ridden , but she preferred to ride the same two over and over again, She rode the Carrousel and the Giant Wheel, which is double decker Ferris Wheel.
In Music Box Way, there are 12 rides that small kids can ride. She loved the monorail which offers a birds eye of part of the park. She was not able to bring an adult onto the busy bee ride, which is just a bunch of bees spinning around, it looks innocent, but the loud buzzing noise scared her so bad that the ride attendant had to stop the ride to let her get off.
In Minetown, there is a ride called the Kissing Tower. It is a spinning observation deck, that goes up a big pole. It is Brown, and the windows are shaped like Hershey Kisses. I hear that local kids go up their to make out, so the name has a double meaning! There are a few carninval type rides that are fun for the little ones, Jessica liked the Dinosaur Go Round, the Red Baron and the Convoy. All 3 were almost the same, ride vehicles circling around a circular track, but the kids really go for them, and there was never a line of over 5 minutes.
There were a few rides that I thought the height ranges were wrong on. The Tilt a World ride was deemed safe for a child under 40 inches tall. This is a spinning whirling whipping ride that I would under NO circumstances put a child under 5 years old on. The Wild Mouse roller coaster had me scared for my life, yet it is deemed safe for 41 inch tall kids. I would think twice about letting anyone under 8 years old on it. I would suggest using your best judgment about each ride, and not letting the signs dictate your discussion.
If your kids are picky eaters you will find some familiar foods. There is a Taco Bell, a Subway, a Ben and Jerry's. Coca Cola soft drinks are offered through out the park.
I think that our biggest mistake was, under estimating the size of Hershey Park, It is huge. We did not get to see the whole park, even with the extra 3 hours on the first day, you really need to spend two full days if you want to see everything.
We had a great time on our trip, no it isn't Disneyland, but I will make a return trip!
