We Loved Lowry!

Last week, my family was vacationing in the Tampa area. Based solely on our AAA Guidebook, I chose to take my 3-year old into Tampa to visit the Lowry Park Zoo. Although kids love animals, I was worried that my daughter would lose interest and get restless walking from cage to cage looking at animals. Fortunately, I didn't have to worry for long. I was so impressed at the variety of things offered at this zoo for my 3-year old, as well as for me.
We started our day watching camels and monkeys, but soon found ourselves in the all-new Lorikeet Landing, a netted area where birds fly freely, and even land on you! At first, my daughter was scared by the free-flying birds, but once 5 of them landed on my head and arms, she started laughing! What a neat experience it was to see these creatures so closely, and to get a chance to feed them, too. One of the birds could even unbutton my shirt, which stirred up quite a giggling frenzy for my daughter and for my mother, who visited the zoo with us.
After leaving Lorikeet Landing and viewing other animals, we found a carousel with jungle animals instead of horses, which was a great break from the real animals and a great diversion to keep my daughter happy. Before we finished our visit, we'd also found a petting zoo, manatee viewing area, nature walk, a demonstrator showing off a baby alligator, and a splash fountain park for kids to play and cool off in.
Providing all these extra exciting things made our visit enjoyable, and kept my curious toddler interested in what was going on. Each of these unique activities are spread out throughout the zoo, breaking up the monotony of going from cage to cage. I highly recommend this zoo to families with young children who are staying in the Tampa area. If you are a AAA member, you can pre-purchase discount coupons at a local AAA office.
