We went on our first ski trip to Steamboat Springs March 13 – March 18, 2006. My party consisted of my husband, my six-year-old son, and me. It was really fun!
We stayed at the Steamboat Sheraton, which is ski in/ski out. The location is great. It is right above a ski rental and storage location. The adult ski school meets right outside the door. The rooms are nice but not great. It is reasonably clean and the beds are comfortable. The buffet breakfast in the restaurant is good but expensive at about $50.00 for 2 adults and 1 child. Room service was bad. It is pricey and was cold by the time it got to our room. They provide nice bathrobes on request, which come in handy.
Getting to Steamboat turned out to be hard. We flew into Denver and took Alpine Taxi. They were more than 1 hour late picking us up at the airport. The bus then broke down about half way there and we had to wait a couple more hours to be picked up. So the 4-hour ride to Steamboat took more like 8 hours. Alpine Taxi did not seem to think there was anything bad about that. We took the same shuttle back to the airport and it was fine.
The kids ski school for our 6 year old was excellent. He had a good time and learned to ski well enough to take the easy green slopes with my husband and me.
The adult ski school was OK. There was not much consistency between what the different instructors wanted to teach and there seemed to be a lot of confusion about what level was appropriate for different skiers. I went to a level 3 class and was knocked down by another skier in the class who could not stop. I felt sore enough after that that I had to stop skiing for the rest of the day.
