Steamboat Springs, Colorado could quite possibly be the be overall ski resort in the country. The mountains offer over 100 trails, with many sections intelligently grouped by ability. You will never see green or blue trails anywhere near those expert double black diamond trails. Steamboat has excellent terrain for any skiing ability, and quite enough of it, too. I vacationed there for a week with my family during the holidays and still did not get to many of the trails i wanted to. There are just to many, and this creates very short lift lines due to the sheer amount of terrain. I have skied all my life and consider myself an expert, and many of the trails were almost too difficult for me. One thing you will never say after visiting Steamboat is, "Darn, I wish they had more difficult terrain". Another would be, "All the terrain was too hard". Steamboat is a family resort, as well as an expert's paradise. From toddlers just putting o skis for the first time, all the way to Olympic downhill medalists, Steamboat remains one of the top resorts in the country.
Skiing isn't all you can do in Steamboat. We visited several fine restaurants, and the rustic town reminds me of an old cowboy town. There are many fine stores, with merchants selling from fine pottery and blown glass, to the outdoors stores selling any thing you can think of. The atmosphere is just as much a part of the Steamboat experience as the skiing.
Although Steamboat is my favorite ski resort, all things must have a downside. The lift tickets, along with just about everything else, are quite expensive. The only other drawback is the crowds during holidays. That is expected, that many people would be on vacation during this time, so it is probably no worse than other ski resorts during the holidays. Christmas day was the least crowded of all the days, because many people decide to come up right after Christmas before school starts up for their children again. The day after Christmas was the most crowded, but no lift lines were longer than 8 or 9 minutes. Considering that lines were the worst thing about Steamboat, It is a very good place to visit. Be prepared for the most fun you can have with clothes on.
