| klgarner's Full Review: Beauty and the Beast |
On a recent trip to NYC, I decided to take my kids to see a Broadway show. Since they are ages 14 and 3, I was fairly limited in my choices. I only hoped my 14 year old son would not be too bored at a Disney production.
I am happy to say that he (as were we all) was absolutely thrilled and engrossed at this musical.
Some others who have written epinions about this musical have mentioned that it follows exactly the movie. I actually have never seen the movie, but I'm thinking of getting it now!
The night we attended, we were fortunate enough to catch Andrea McArdle (the original Annie) as the lead in this production, since the very next night she went on a month long vacation. What can I say except that she was wonderful! Her voice was so clear and sweet, the tunes were absolutely enchanting and she carried off the role to perfection.
The sets in the show were a little cartoon-like, but it fit perfectly with the whole story. I especially loved the scenes set in the Beast's castle, with the mysterious atmosphere, the winding staircases and the interesting corners.
While obviously Belle and the Beast are the central figures in the show, Gaston and Lumiere are delightful characters. Lumiere is hilarious with his droll comments and inuendos.
One of my favorite scenes was the "Be Our Guest" scene, with (I think) every actor in the show. So much was happening, it was hard to know where to look.
The show's finale is truly spectacular, with an amazing transformation of the Beast back into a man.
The production truly appeals to folks of all ages, the theatre was full of small children to senior citizens, and everyone walked away full of smiles.
