This is a review of the 24 Hour Fitness in St. Charles, Missouri (approximately 25 miles east of downtown St. Louis).
My fiance and I have been members of this club since September 2002. We enjoy attending the gym together but there are downsides to this club. We usually attend around 5pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and it can get very crowded - especially on Mondays and Wednesdays. There is usually a wait for the general machines and the free weight area. There are, however, an ample number of cardio machines (such as treadmills, stairmasters, ellipticals, cross trainers and both regular and reclining bikes) and I have never personally experienced a wait to use the machine I want.
There is usually one of each kind of general weight-training machine. The wait can become interminable as people tend to "claim" one machine and use it for 20 minutes!
There is a large free-weight section but the area is small and tends to get very crowded. The free-weights line a mirrored wall and the section is crowded with incline benches and flat benches. It is a very cramped area and we usually take our free-weight and then move away from the area to do our routine.
The gym itself is divided into two rooms. One very large warehouse type room with the general equipment, some cardio machines and the free-weights. The second room is smaller and floor-to-ceiling window-lined. This room contains the main bulk of the cardio machines. This room is ALWAYS HOT!! I have complained numerous times regarding this and have been told they are working on turning on the air conditioning. It is almost torture-like to do 20 minutes of cardio in this room. The air is extremely humid from body heat and the windows are always fogged. I will most likely complain again tonight.
I have attended many classes held at the gym and have no complaints. The classes I have attended include: Pilates/Yoga, Step and Kickboxing. The class leaders are great and keep you motivated during the hour long classes. I have never seen a class that is very crowded and there is plenty of room to spread out. The group exercise room is usually very cool and kept at an appropriate temperature for a long cardio workout.
The group exercise classes offered at this gym include: Step, Core, Rep Reebok, AbXpress, Kickboxing, Cycling and Aqua and Water Aerobics.
The gym is a Sport Club and contains many amenities such as: a full size basketball court, group cycling, a Kid's Club, a large pool, a Pro Shop containing clothing, health drinks and snacks and supplements, a sauna and steam room, a whirlpool and personal training is available.
