| tiasmom's Full Review: Cabbage Soup Diet |
When I want to lose a few pounds, I do a modified version of the Cabbage Soup Diet. I would never have the willpower to stick to a very restricted diet, and I don’t think they are effective in the long term. You end up feeling so deprived that you gorge yourself as soon as the diet ends, gaining back all the weight and then some. That is, if you are like me. I don’t like deprivation.
My version of the diet, which I was just on last week, does cause me to shed a few pounds, but in a less torturous way. I don’t completely swear off all desserts, but I cut way back on many things. I stop the constant snacking and eliminate most of the bread products from my diet. If you follow this, you may lose about five pounds or so in a week. But you have to really like cabbage soup! Note: I am not a dietician and this is just what I do for myself. If you feel it’s not a healthy way to lose weight, ask your doctor before trying it.
First, my cabbage soup recipe. I don’t use exact measurements or use the same ingredients every time. But what I end up with tastes pretty good.
-I use chicken broth for the base-For my current batch, I used a half carton of College Inn broth and several cups of water. You can also use buillion cubes if you prefer. I've also used canned vegetable broth, and it's just as good.
-Cut up half a head of cabbage, several carrots, and a couple of green onions; add to broth.
-Season to taste-I like cilantro, parsley, a bit of red pepper, black pepper, garlic powder, among other things.
-This time I added a can of navy beans for protein, but that’s optional.
-Cook on a low burner for about half an hour.
What I do for the diet is the following: For breakfast, I’ll have a bowl of Grape Nuts cereal sprinkled with wheat germ (it actually tastes good!)and maybe half a grapefruit. Grapefruits and cabbage are diuretics and are said to burn fat. I also drink lots of water. Green tea is also said to burn fat and is an anti-oxidant, so I sometimes have iced or hot green tea.
For lunch, I have the cabbage soup and more water. Sometimes I’ll add a large salad with fat-free dressing and a cut up hard boiled egg for extra protein. Other times, I’ll just have the soup.
For dinner, I try to eat whatever I like but in moderation. I refuse to deprive myself and end up binging. I eat a bit less than normal and usually always have dessert. I find if I give up everything, I cannot stick to a diet for more than a couple of days.
I don’t notice a large weight loss on the scale, but the important thing is that I feel better and my clothes do not fit as tightly. It really reduces puffiness and seems to reduce cellulite, at least temporarily. It will make you thirsty because of the diuretic effect, so drink plenty of fluids. Good luck with whatever you try.
