This one is my next step! (Reply to this comment)

I tried the Atkin's diet and found it to be too restrictive so I recently bought this book and I'm almost done reading it. This will be my next diet when I jump back on the bandwagon in February. I totally agree that people don't understand if they aren't carbo addicted and some people like myself just can't loose weight with diet and exercise alone. I am a Weight Watchers failure-mostly because their system doesn't have this type of setup for low carbs. Some people need a certain type of diet. This format is actually very similar to the diabetic diet that I was on when I was pregnant with diabetes and does really work for some people.

About those naysayers... (Reply to this comment)

I know exactly what you mean. A person will, in one breath tell me how great I look, and how content and relaxed I seem, and in the next breath go off on me about doing such a crazy dangerous thing as eat fewer carbs!

Nice review, thanks for your take on the Hellers' book.

How many carbs allowed per day? (Reply to this comment)
by mom2ericha
How many carbs are allowed per day? I know the Atkins diet is very restricted. I just have a hard time lowering my carb intake to such a low number: I agree carbs make me listless and sluggish and also I crave more and more....when I eat fast food I totally crave junk like chips and dip!!! (my downfall). Coming from a carb junkie, I'd love more info on this plan!!!! By the way, great job on the review! :)

You may have convinced me to try again (Reply to this comment)

Basically you have covered the two problems I had with the low-carb diet: the cravings and the crabbiness. If I had one hour of carb indulgence to look forward to each day, I might be able to make this work.

Sometimes I think we just have to go with what our bodies are telling us. And it seems to me that you're saying you're pretty tuned in to those messages. Based on your profile, your holistic interests, and the context of your choices, you've done your homework on this one --- IMHO.
