| MsHooterville's Full Review: Eat Right 4 Your Type Diet |
The first time I heard of the "Eat Right 4 Your Type" diet was in the spring of 1998 when I saw a couple who come to town once a year for a meeting. Both the man and the woman were on the heavy side, but not really obese in my opinion.
When I saw them after a year, the man was actually skinny, and the woman was definitely, noticeably thinner. Of course, I asked him what the two of them had been doing, and he told me about this book.
He explained to me that he was blood type A, and that meant his body is best suited for grains, poultry, fruits and that he should AVOID red meat, wheat, and a whole host of other foods. He didn't find this difficult at all. He did say his wife, who had lost quite a bit of weight, was a Type O and found the diet harder to follow. They had to eat different meals in a lot of cases, because his type called for him to avoid some foods, while her type thrived on those same foods.
For some reason, the science of this process, unappealing and inconvenient as it seemed to be, captured my imagination. I already knew my blood type was B, so I bought the book and was ready to go -- after my exodus to the grocery store.
As it turns out, B types are the luckiest of all. We get read meats, almost all dairy products, and a decent amount of vegetables and fruits. However, I was to avoid ALL wheat products, which leaves out many, many things. Chicken also is on my no-no list. I could eat Cherrios, because oats are good for Bs. I tried cereals like Kashi for the first time (looks like bird food, tastes like bird food).
Dr. D'Adamo also has a website with updates for the diet. I had initially been delighted that my favorite fish, salmon, was good for me and I could have as much as I wanted. But once I looked at the website, I found salmon had been banished from my list! What a crushing disappointment.
He also recommends lots and lots of supplements, so I bought Lecithin to add to pineapple juice, got magnesium tablets and Liccorice -- all the great stuff the good doctor promised would be good for me.
The good part about this diet (I have to salvage something) is that it has given me SOME semi-scientific background about the physiology of my blood type, which does seem to have some merit. I do believe some of the foods which this diet recommended for my blood type, like meat, dairy and cheeses, help explain why I feel really good on the Atkins plan, which I will write about later.
Otherwise, I found this plan too boring, too complicated, and based on the diet changes announced only on his website, a little untrustworthy. You can't eat this way for the rest of your life, no matter what your type is. And I was one of the Lucky Bs who could have more variety than the As, Os and ABs!
