| jtlipps's Full Review: Protein Power Plan |
I have always been overweight. Not really fat but carrying extra weight. I saw this in the book store and decided to give it a try.
I read the entire book to ensure that I understood everything and then started the diet. I calculated that I was about 35 pounds over my idea weight. (The book tells you how to make that calculation) I followed the diet to the letter. I ate 0 grams per day of carbs for the first month and then allowed myself about 15 grams a day after that(about two slices of bread(diet bread at that)). I implemented a work out plan as well.
The first couple of weeks I would have killed for a cracker. There was a snack machine where I was working and as I walked by it I would drool looking not at the candy but at the crackers. They seemed so innocent, so close, so temptingly close. But no I stuck with the plan. (I still cannot believe that a cracker was so tempting.)
I ate meat and salad. Actually I shouldn't say salad. More like plain lettuce. Gets kind of dull after a very finite period of time. You can eat a better variety. I guess my imagination was not that good.
The effects were dramatic. The first full week I lost 11 pounds. the book assured me this was normal (most of it water weight) Then things calmed down. Over the next two months I lost 40 pounds. That's right 40 pounds. I was never really hungry but I did get hungry for every meal (that had not happened in a long time.
Now the problems.
About 1 month in, I was running on the treadmill and I passed out. That is a horrible place to pass out. You wake up in an ambulance for some reason with road rash and you were not even on the road. The doctor said I was hypo-tensive due to water loss. I was drinking 1 1/2 gallons a day of water. See the diet causes you to shed excess water even at the expense of blood volume. Working out will make it worse, hence the problems on the treadmill. After that I had to take it easy.
I had foul smelling urine. The diet places you in a condition called ketosis. This is a process where your body is processing body-fat but incompletely. The byproduct is passed out through urination. Nasty smell though. Sorry so graphic but you need to know.
I didn't have any other problems but the issue here is what other things are possible. Additionally the diet may have worked not just from the lack of carbs. You tend to eat less when you get started and that certainly has an effect.
Based on the treadmill incident I would not recommend this diet. The urine I could deal with but that passing out thing was scary. I don't think that this will work for a lifetime.
