| vogner's Full Review: Sugar Busters! |
This is the second time that I have done this diet. The first time lasted about 3 months and I lost 20 pounds with no exercise. This time has been 4 months with exercise and I've lost about the same amount though I wasn't as heavy to start with. Most of the weight was lost in the first 3 months. The last month my weight has been stable. I feel better and I look better. I've lost about 5 inches from my waist and am noticeably thinner to people who haven't seen me in awhile. This diet will work but you have to be strict, especially during the weight loss phase. I am now trying to maintain weight and will occasionally stray on weekends with no weight gain.
While there are no definitive restrictions on portion size, eating reasonable amounts is helpful. The first 2 weeks in my opinion were the hardest. The craving for carbs was pretty strong, but eventually subsided. There are a variety of low carb "sweets" to help out with the cravings without blowing the diet. I highly recommend exercise as an adjunct especially to help with maintenance.
I like this diet and it has worked well for me. It doesn't work for everyone. My wife lost virtually no weight on this diet. She responds well to exercise alone and eats what she wants. There is no perfect diet, and if there was one, there would only be one. This diet has the benefit of allowing foods that are often frowned upon with other diets i.e. fats. Also there is no counting or weighing etc. There is nothing special to buy other than the book. You don't have to eat their foods, you aren't charged by the pound, you don't have to be followed by a physician, etc. There is little financial investment. There are also several forums on the net that act as a support group for questions as well as being a free resource for recipes and such.
I would recommend this diet to anyone who has tried and failed the standard "heart healthy" low fat diet. This approach works for some people, but not everyone. It didn't work for me. Some people are concerned since this can be a high fat diet that it may have an adverse effect on their cholesterol. My total cholesterol dropped 25 points to 183, my triglycerides dropped 20+ points to 87, my HDL is 56, and my LDL dropped from 127 to 103. Did the diet or the exercise do it? I don't know. What I do know is that it did not make it worse. The benefit of having fats in the diet is increased satiety. You just aren't hungry all of the time. One thing that I have definitely found to be true is that carbs increase your appetite. When I have strayed and eaten a sugary food, I find that over the next few hours I want to eat alot more of it. I don't have that overwhelming desire to stuff my face when I am sticking to the diet.
In the end this diet works for many people its easier in some ways than many diets harder in others. Its not a miracle and if you're looking for a diet that will help you lose 10 lbs a week eating anything and everything this ain't it. If you're willing to follow their plan and are patient you can lose the weight you want to lose. In the end, it still requires willpower. You have to say no to carbs. Sometimes easier said than done.
If you have any significant medical problems you should discuss this diet with your physician.
