1776 by David McCullough, Another Pulitzer Prize?

by popsrocks popsrocks is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Books, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Oct 04 '05
Pros: An incredibly vivid account of General George Washington's first year of command.
Cons: Disappointed it ended with another 70 pages in the book dedicated to bibliography and index.
Once again author David McCullough brings the years of the American Revolution to life. The first account of these years was brought forward in McCullough's John Adams, a marvelous book, for which he earned a Pulitzer Prize. It is noted to be a ...

David McCullough Brings Life to 1776

by keithpruitt keithpruitt is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Books, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Jan 22 '06
Pros: An engaging quest to discover Washington tells much about the time.
Cons: The reader will want 1777, 1778, 1779...
When writers attempt to write about the past they risk making two errors: rewriting history to fit preconceived ideas and secondly, writing prose in a pedantic style giving credence to the stereotype that history is boring and meaningless. Seldom does a ...

American History Brought to Life

by pvreditor Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 200, Aug 17 '05
Pros: Exciting, colorful, interesting and balanced
Cons: When is 1777 coming out?
The best history books explain events by drawing clear pictures of the participants. For example, you can't really grasp the US Civil War until you understand the personalities and actions of Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee and Jefferson ...

That's the spirit

by BBailey182 , Jun 27 '05
Pros: Exciting story, well told.
Cons: The title may mislead some.
It's a sign that David McCullough has written another fine book when the biggest complaint comes with the title. That's right, the title. I'm sure they when many people who read Harry Truman or John Adams biographies by McCullough had heard he had ...

1776-The year America almost wasn’t born

by pubscout , Aug 13 '05
Pros: Easy read, loaded with interesting details into characters' lives...history come alive here.
Cons: No mention of the arrest of Royal Governor William Franklin in Perth Amboy
No one who reads this exceptional book can come away with anything but a newfound respect for the "rabble" upon whom depended the fate of a nation aborning--and the remarkable man who led them, George Washington. In a time when Americans seem to be ...

This best selling novel coves the events from October 26, 1775 to¬¬ January 3, 1777, and the start of the battle that would change history, to one of the significant turning points of the war. David McCullough does an excellent job of telling of the ...

Bringing 1776 to 2006 audience

by hobb2712 , Oct 15 '06
Pros: Primary sources give inquisitive look into 1776 America
Cons: Abrupt ending compounded by sixty pages of references
I heard David McCollough speak during my undergraduate days at the University of Oklahoma. He was as captivating in person as his page-turning writing style. The most amazing fact about the author might be that his narrative storytelling style has been ...

Captivating

by em1080 , Jun 06 '08
Pros: Easy to read, interesting details
Cons: I love this book, and find nothing negative about it.
This book explains in detail all of the events surrounding the nation's founding. As a US History and Government teacher, I can say this book goes beyond the surface of what a textbook would cover. The author uses details that paint a deeper picture of ...

Just got my copy
by mdcclxxvi4ever ,Sep 13 '06
Pros: Extremely detailed.
Cons: Some copies were in worse condition and more expensive.
I just bought this book on paperback and really like it. This book is a piece of Americana right here. I was not about to pay thirty-seven dollars and twenty-eight cents for a book whose interior has been ripped up and glued back together when I paid nineteen dollars and seventeen cents for a copy in better condition. This book has every detail of that year in it, including the people and sites of the battles. If anybody likes anything about early United States history, this is the book for you. It has become my favorite third-person history account.
