Acropolis and Time by texas-swede in Hotels & Travel, ,Oct 05 '09
Pros: Amazing ancient buildings, visible from everywhere in Athens, night visit is amazing. Cons: In ruins
I've been to Athens a few times but it was years ago. Arguably the most prominent tourist attraction in Athens is Acropolis (and it does not change much through the years). Acropolis is a flat rocky hill that holds a set of large beautiful ancient marble buildings, the most prominent of them being the Parthenon. Acropolis and Parthenon are visible from anywhere in Athens. Parthenon is 100 feet by 230 feet, 98 feet tall, and was built around 480BCE to the Goddess Athena. Other buildings in Acropolis are Erechtheum, and Propylaea. There are also a number of smaller buildings which essentially have been raised to the ground. At the foot of Acropolis there are a number of theaters and buildings for example the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
Even though Acropolis is truly astounding I was also surprised to see how destroyed it is. Various invaders and time has taken its toll. I think there are several ancient buildings around the Mediterranean that rivals Acropolis in terms of how interesting it is to see. I would like to recommend Acropolis at night when they turn on the night lights, especially if it is full moon.
