Pros: Great character development, solid story Cons: Depressing, silly romantic sub-plot
Ive read several novels by Jodi Picoult this year. I find that they each have a lot in common. Ms. Picoult seems to write fairly depressing stories about teens and children for the most part. Ive become glued to her books, and ...

Pros: Interesting genre, characters, plot. Cons: None!
A couple of weeks ago, I read a review of Jodi Picoult’s newest novel, Nineteen Minutes. I had not been aware that the book was coming out, but the plot sounded interesting and I have enjoyed Picoult’s books in the past. I quickly placed an order at ...

Pros: An extraordinary ability to fairly examine two sides of a difficult, provocative issue. Cons: Some readers would take issue with there being two sides to the issue at all.
Peter Houghton would hardly be considered a typical seventeen year old teenager. Because one morning, he loaded his backpack with four guns, went to school and killed nine students and a teacher.Jodi Picoult's enthralling best-selling novel ...

Pros: Great characterization, intricate plot, well told, makes you think. Cons: Slow paced, some unlikable characters, massive leaps in time.
The brilliant, neon colored hopes of youth. The risks, the dares, the soaring hopes are so boundless, so natural, so easily destroyed. Yes, Virginia, life isn’t fair and although the dingy cloak of maturity hides the inner child and that raging voice, we ...

Pros: Compelling story, suprise ending Cons: none of the artistic nuances of Picoult's earlier works
Nineteen Minutes is Jodi Picoult’s most recent novel, and I predict it will become her best seller to date. It focuses on the events leading up to and following a high school shooting. Peter Houghton, picked on by school mates from the first day of ...

Pros: Current, relevant topic; insightful, realistic portrayal of youth and the impact of social heirarchy Cons: It's too true - it may be fiction, but it's art imitating life.
If you were a teenager in any American high school when the Columbine school shooting took place, you know that times have changed compared to "the good old days" (read: before Columbine). School shootings have become more common, but school security has ...

Pros: Picoult's description of high school life is so accurate, so vivid. Cons: The ending isn't as much a shock as the book intends.
I picked up Jodi Picoult's Nineteen Minutes while shopping for groceries at the local market. I had absolutely no idea what the book was about but I had read another Jodi Picoult book called The Pact years earlier and had loved it. I was not to be ...

Pros: A great novel that will make you think and will also surprise! Cons: None!
A few weeks ago I read Jodi Picoults novel Nineteen Minutes. As usual I spent the entire novel conflicted. Not because I did not like the book (I certainly loved it) but because I never seem to know whose side I am suppose to be on. This is because ...

Pros: captivating, honest, relevant Cons: not a happy story
Jodi Picoult’s books never seem to disappoint me. Her writing style draws you in very quickly and makes it hard to put the book down. Picoult’s books are by no means happy go lucky, but touch on very real topics. Most recently, I read 19 Minutes ...

Pros: addresses current concerns, intricate, compelling, riveting Cons: Some high school stereotypes
Sterling New Hampshire is a quaint, quiet, town until one day an event unfolds in the high school so horrific that it holds the town hostage in anger, confusion, and fear. Life is forever divided between before and after. Peter is smart but he lives ...

Pros: Great read, page turner, something different, based upon topic that is a headliner Cons: Sometimes completely heart wrenching
This book deals with a fictional form of what so many people have not experienced in true life. We have all, in some form or another, been touched by a school shooting. This book opens your eyes to things that you might not have previously considered ...

my review
by mywoodybird ,Apr 02 '07
Pros: Very Engrossing and has a somewhat unpredictable ending Cons: The shootings were very graphically described more than was necessary.
Very enthralling. Good twisting and turning in plot of book. Good character portrayal. What I liked was the way the author developed the plot and the relationships between the characters. What I disliked was the graphic nature of some of the material. The ending was predictable for Peter but unforeseen for Josie. Jodi describes bullying in schools in thorough detail and also describes teenager's struggles and mindsets. The unexpected end is very dramatic.
