The French Laundry Cookbook: for committed cooks only

by conradd Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Dec 22 '00
Pros: Beautiful photography; excellent tips and techniques
Cons: Highly unrealistic for almost all home kitchens; cost of ingredients would break most food budgets
If Thomas Keller, French Laundry restaurant owner, had been interested in art instead of cooking, the world might have been blessed with another Renoir or Rembrandt. His passionate dedication to excellent food requires uncompromising dedication to only...

The Most Beautiful Cookbook You Will Never Use

by lapook76 , Nov 12 '01
Pros: Exquisite photography; amazingly-complex dishes.
Cons: Unless you are a master chef, most recipes will be next to impossible.
I am at a bit of a loss as to how to rate this book. If I were to rate it purely as a cookbook, I would give it two or three stars, as most of the recipes are virtually impossible for a home cook without the aid of a restaurant kitchen and an army of...

"Food Porn" at its Best1

by mollymom48 , Jan 25 '07
Pros: gorgeous photography, treats food and cooking with a reverence bordering on a religious experience
Cons: beautiful to look at, almost impossible to use for the average cook

Pros: Inventive and amazingly delicious recipes, makes for great reading too
Cons: It's only for the truly dedicated home chef
The French Laundry is Thomas Keller's small, but enormously popular and highly regarded restaurant in Napa Valley California. The restaurant is regarded by many food critics as one of the best, if not the best, restaurants in the country.

Recreate 'The French Laundry' At Home

by thornhill , Aug 22 '00
Pros: Great recipes, great pictures
Cons: The recipes are very involved
When Thomas Keller re-opened the French Laundry in the Napa Valley, his cooking began to earn him the praise that he has continued to receive since.

The French Laundry is famous for serving a prix fixe menu of small dishes, each one said to be...

Tough recipes, but a great coffee table book.

by bfeinstein , Feb 17 '06
Pros: Beautiful photos and well written--makes a great coffee table book.
Cons: Recipes are extremely complicated and involved. Difficult for even an intermediate chef.
Like many of the other cooks who previously reviewed this book, I also balked at the complexity of preparation for most of the dishes. I have, however, cooked many of the dishes or used his techniques to improve certain dishes that I wanted to make. ...
