Pros: Cheap.
Cons: VERY NOISY. Terrible quality of assembly. Multiple problems. Finniky, surges alot.

I bought this as an emergency standby generator because it was the least expensive generator with the highest output. It should have been perfect!

In truth, I hate it.

It is horribly noisy (so much so that I had to weld on a second muffler inline just to make it 'acceptable' to the neighbours ... ie. changes it from "screaming loud" to just "loud").

It leaked oil from the first time I used it, and had to have it repaired (tech said that internal dowel was missing due to shoddy assembly. He has seen "alot" of these since a certain major retailer took on the product line and "rolled back" the price and quality).

When that was being repaired, they noticed that the thing didn't actually generate any power. Had to drive it 25 miles to an "authorized coleman repair depot" and they rebuilt the armature because, again, of shoddy assembly.

Keep in mind all of this is after ONE hour of testing.

The thing still doesn't run smoothly. Constantly surges and pops.

The wheels are too small to do anything but roll on hard-packed ground.

Pros: Generates power
Cons: All the oil leaked out while in storage; unacceptably loud.

Luckily I only used it once to test. Worked fine but earplugs required even to start it. All the oil leaked out over several months while sitting in the garage. Cheap Briggs and Stratton engine, no dipstick - just pour in oil until it spills out...c'mon...Next time I'll buy a Honda.

Pros: Alot of power at a affordable price
Cons: LOUD!! must keep a good distance away from the house

I bought a coleman powermate 6250 for my dad and paralized brother.They have frequent power outages and living in a hurricane and tornado area they can not afford to go with out a reliable generator.After hurricane Katrina they went 5 weeks without power,and if it would not have been for this very reliable generator they would have been in a real big bind.

It is a great generator it will give you all the power that you could ever use.It might sound like a helicopter when its running.But when you are without power you will be glad to hear that sound.It does use a good bit of gas,we did not run a heavy load on it all the time and we were able to get 16hours of running before refueling.

Pros: Auto low oil shutoff system. Large gas tank. Comes with pull handle and two tires.
Cons: Does not come with an engine service manual.

This version comes with a 10 HP Tecumseh engine. It is basically the same unit advertised elsewhere as the Coleman Powermate 5500 or the Coleman Powermate Premium Plus 6250. This version is manual start. One good thing is the "Low oil shutoff system". Never worry again about running the unit with low oil. In fact when you first get one and try to start it, it will not start. After reading the booklet, you find out it is shipped without oil and therefore can NOT be started. Pros: will power your portable a.c,fridge,fans,microwave and so on.
Cons: apart from running to get gas,thats it!

I have just tested this genorator and its really not as loud as people say.Its as load as my lttle push lawn mower.i started it in an enclosed screened in porch(not the place to keep it if your running it i know) but just to test it.
Most of the reviews say it does leak some oil but it will shut itself off if it gets low on oil,just have some spare oil at the ready.mine does not leak so far.
