Good Idea - Bad implementation
by chfennell ,Jan 24 '05
Pros: Fresh Ground Coffee. Timer. Thermal Carafe.
Cons: Hard to clean. Loud. Coffee not hot enough. Leaks.
My "Grind and Brew" leaks from both the main body and from the carafe when pouring. About once a month, the filter basket flies open when grinding and showers the kitchen with coffee grounds. The coffee isn't hot enough and once you add cream, it has to be nuked.

And I don't understand those folks who say it's easy to clean. Besides the thermal carafe, you have to clean the top and bottom of the grinder, inside the grinding compartment and inside the filter basket.

And on mine, the filter basket holder is a major pain to deal with. It often doesn't latch firmly, causing it to come open as the grounds are shooting into it. The grounds get caught in the hinge mechanism for the basket and gum it up and there is no easy way to remove it to clean out the grounds.

That is bad enough when you are watching it, but when it happens on the timer, not only do the grounds end up all over the kitchen, but the pot continues to run, pouring hot water over the outside of the carafe, because the filter basket is now out of position.

very disappointed
by gamefisher ,Oct 23 '04
Pros: cool looking design
Cons: more trouble than its worth
I've always respected the Cuisinart name as fine cooking stuff. This coffee maker is far from the mark. At least two times a month the machine has spurted coffee all over the counter while coffee is brewing. You wake up to a mess. The most frustrating thing about this bad habit is that I can't figure out why. The carafe is nearly impossible to pour from without spilling coffee also. The grind & brew feature sounds good, but while the coffee is brewing steam collects in the coffee hopper so that when the next pot of coffee is made the whole unit must be taken apart & dried off or coffee grounds will stick to the moist parts of the hopper & grinder, clog up & not work properly. I hope someone from Cuisinart reads this review so they will know some of these things because obviously they have never tried their machine.

Great Coffee
by lawandorder ,Dec 31 '06
Pros: Great coffee, easy to clean
Cons: none
I was looking for a coffee maker that was easy to use and made great coffee and I found it. The key to success is to warm the carafe first, use high quality beans and good water (I have been using bottled water) The results are superb. There is no guessing as to how long to grind the beans, just measure and the machine does the rest. There is nothing better then the aroma of fresh ground beans and fresh brewed coffee. I have tried making a small amount of coffee (4 cups) and the results are as good as making a full pot. The carafe keeps the coffee hot for a long time as long as you preheat the carafe. I run water through the machine to heat the carafe. It is easy to clean. I would recommend this to anyone.

I will never buy pre-ground coffee again!
by freedom4all ,Aug 09 '04
Pros: Coffee consistently brewed well, insulated coffee pot - machine turns off after brewing
Cons: Basket popping open and spilling coffee everywhere, design problems with pot and water holder
I really like this coffeemaker. This is my first experience grinding my own coffee and I am really enjoying it. The grinder on this product is loud, but it's a grinder, so what do you expect. Anyway, this coffeemaker performs well, but has a couple of problems: 1. The basket (where the filter is placed) sometimes pops open and spills coffee all over the counter; 2. The area where you pour the water is not marked well, so it is difficult to see the numbers (to determine how much water you are putting in the machine); and 3. Price - I spent 150 on this machine, which seemed like a lot for a coffeemaker at the time, but compared to similar products it is not that expensive. I really like the design and appearance of this product (except for the fingerprints which I stopped trying to clean off, because they just reappear). The coffee pot that comes with this machine is designed funky - you cannot pour out all of the coffee without taking the top off (weird, huh?). If I had it to do over, I might have stuck with the non-stainless steel version.

Don't bother
by rtp4974 ,Jan 20 '04
Pros: Looks
Cons: The works
This machine makes a better boat anchor than coffee brewer. Coffee is very weak and there’s no way to adjust brew, can’t even add more beans because it isn’t large enough. Lots of grounds in the coffee plus it’s a PIA to clean as you need to disassemble and let completely dry before next brew. Not recommended

MOMMA TOLD YOU: DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER
by bahaus ,Nov 20 '03
Pros: Looks great
Cons: Fussy, hard to use, needs loads of coffee to make a decent cup
The coffee maker looks so fine all chrome and black, we were happy to spend 150 bucks after we spent 35K on the new kitchen.

Well, it looks great, but its an over all pain, it does not grind as well as a small Braun hand held grinder, it takes up a lot of space, it needs a ton of coffee to make a decent cup (about 2x what I used to use) and there are a lot of small fussy parts.

I must say you will be much happier with a $20 Braun coffee grinder and whatever quality drip coffee maker you like.

Save your money and you can buy a espresso maker too!

BIG problems
by benhorn ,Jun 16 '05
Pros: Nice idea
Cons: Big defect
We stopped using this coffeemaker completely about 60 days after purchasing. The tray which holds the ground coffee pops out of the device during the brewing cycle. The remaining coffee ends up on the kitchen counter instead of in the pot. A huge defect.

Also, my wife hates this coffeemaker because of all the parts which must be cleaned daily: 5 parts, 2 of which are difficult to clean off all the wet grounds which get stuck in hard-to-reach crevices. The 5 parts are all dishwasher-safe but she says it is still a hassle to have so many parts to clean.

...wake up, & smell the coffee, Cuisinart haters!
by alphafade ,Dec 04 '03
Pros: It is a lean, mean Grind'n'Brew machine
Cons: I spent 260 dollars on this machine and I still go to Starbucks every day
This coffee maker rules and is probably the best damned thing I have ever used in my life. I don't know what my life was like before I got this magical little percolating love machine but one thing is for sure, I am a lot more happy now that we have been aquainted. I have a special relationship with my Cuisinart & Grind'n'Brew coffee maker and no one is going to take that away! You people that wrote in unfavorable reviews probably didn't even read the instructions. "my carafe leaks" How can it leak? It is made out of sweet'n'lovely solid stainless steel! I would also like to mention that some person wrote in saying "the coffee grinder is too loud" I challenge anyone out there to find a coffee grinder that operates silently. mission improbable! besides the reason you are drinking the coffee is to wake up anyways my alarm clock busted and there is no sweeter sound than the soft purr of my Cuisinart Grind'n'Brew coffee maker first thing in the morning...
Thank you for your time ;)

Good when it worked
by redkrider ,Jan 24 '05
Pros: The idea of "grind, Brew, and keep warm" seemed good.
Cons: Cost. Poor Quality.
It worked great in the beginning, but after a couple of months, the "cup" that holds the beans seems to be jammed. Meaning that it cant be removed to be cleaned. Cuisinart customer service has not been responsive at all. So, yes it makes coffee, but for the price, I wouldn't have expected the quality to be so poor. Perhaps we got a lemon, but we have a Krups we've been using for about 10 years performed without a hitch. I would even be happy with a method to repair the thing since it was so expensive. But again, we have not gotten any response from Cuisinart.

Now I know why France lost two world wars.
by agbtrading ,Aug 24 '04
Pros: Stylish in appearance. The ideais a good one.
Cons: Sadly, form does not equal function in this product.
My wife bought this for me for a gift this spring, replacing our Krups carafe coffee-maker. The idea of a grind-brew machine is a good one. The appearance of the Cuisinart is very attractive and stylish; but that is about all that I can say for it. The grinder produces 'chunks', not fine particles. This has to affect the end result insofar as taste is concerned. It also tends to clog the draining mechanism in the filter holder, causing overflow onto the countertop. This has happened more times than I care to count. Once the door popped open while brewing and I had coffee all over the tile and countertop. The carafe is very slow to pour out the substandard brew. It is a pain to clean, and dry, no fewer than 5 different parts each time one wants to make a pot.

I have come to the conclusion that I'll never buy another product from France that has moving parts; although our Peugeot pepper mill is outstanding.

As of this day, I'm getting out my old Krups. Wunderbar!

What A Mess
by yippeee33 ,Jul 28 '04
Pros: Great Looks.
Cons: Messy grinds and coffee all over your kitchen counter.
I have owned this coffee maker for over a year, and for the fifth time this week I have coffee grinds all over the counter. The basket/filter gets stuck and pours the hot coffee all over the carafe and your counter. This product may look cool, but stay away from it!

SchatzieBear
by schatziebear ,Dec 10 '03
Pros: Sorry Star Bucks, I'm keeping my money! Wonderful fresh brew, can't be beat!
Cons: Be sure to empty previous coffee from the carafe to prevent so-called leaks (overflows)!
Well...What can I say.. I LOVE this coffee system. I do agree that there may be some minor improvements coming our way with the next Cuisinart Grind and Brew upgrade.. But, perhaps, just a little word of warning to those of you who seem to believe that this coffee system leaks, the pot leaks, etc. (which is impossible unless broken)..must have done exactly what I did a couple times...I simply didn't have the carafe empty! That's a NO-NO...easily remedied by taking an extra second or two to make sure you have dumped all the previous coffee from the carafe.! Presto!! Wonderful coffee. Excuse me, but I'm heading right now to my kitchen for the best darn afternoon "coffee pick-me-up" money can buy! Sorry Star Bucks, I'm keeping my money! Have better things to spend it on than $2,$3 cups of coffee... Excuse me... gotta go have another cup-a that wonderful stuff! Mmmmmm Good!

How Many Times Do You Have To Press Start For A Pot Of Coffee?
by pahweepah ,Jan 25 '05
Pros: Think the concept is great and it really looks good in the kitchen.
Cons: makes a mess, loud, hard to clean and I expect more from Cuisinart!
I purchased this product for Christmas 2003 and was so excited as we like to grind fresh beans, take the coffee pot to the living area with us and wake up to the smell of fresh coffee! We thought we had a winner! I am now sending back my second machine for malfunctioning at additional cost of $25.oo each time you return it.
After about six months, the machine will only brew 1 cup of coffee at a time wether or not you have the 1-4 cup brew option pressed, I literally press start 9 times to get a full pot of coffee.
Like others the top leaks if you turn it up too far, it's difficult to fill the water resivoir and it makes a gunky mess in the grinder- I was willing to live with this to have my fresh coffee in the morning.
Maybe third time is a charm, it not-it's all out war with cuisinart for not doing their homework.

Avoid this one!
by toyz007 ,Dec 15 '03
Pros: looks nice on counter
Cons: everything else
The bottom line is that this machine makes lousy coffee. We have tried adjusting all the variables (water; coffee beans; gold vs. paper filter) to no avail. The coffee is weak, weak, weak! There is also way too much clean up after each pot of coffee. The basket doesn't always stay closed and we've had numerous disasters of water and coffee grinds all over the counter and on the floor. You can't adjust the grind of the beans, the bean grinder is too small to make a large pot of coffee, and the coffee tastes bitter and awful. I used the same beans in my old coffee maker and the result was fine. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this machine.
