Notes about this Review
I took some pictures of hardware I recently received. This includes some pictures of the Epson 2450 Photo scanner. The other products in these pictures are or will be reviewed separately by me:
Pros: Remarkable quality scans (including 35mm transparencies), Silverfast SE Software Cons: A bit slow on 35 mm, but hardly worth a mention...
My fortunes have changed. I've been up and down as often as a yo-yo. I recently found a need for a better film scanner (35 mm slide scanner). I have an old Polaroid Sprintscan that still does a lovely job except it produces lots of noise (ugly,...
Pros: High resolution, 4x9 inch scanning area, Firewire and USB 2 interfaces, excellent software, good value. Cons: Slower than previous models, No automatic document feeder, limited range of neg holders.
It doesn't seem that long ago that I was writing about the ground-breaking Epson 1640su scanner capable of professional results for just a few hundred dollars. I bought one knowing little about it's capabilities or operation, and have been in love ever...
A friend sent me some samples of a 4x5 negative scanned on his Epson 2450. I tested out my friend's Epson 2450 and got much better results than I expected from the previous two sets of images printed on my scanner. Based on what I saw, I'm ordering a...
Pros: Great Value, High res, easy to use Software. good transparency performance. Cons: Easy software Stiffles pros, Easily scratched Plexiglass bed, Poor dust control.
I'll keep this quick, since i can't say a whole lot more than "this scanner kicks @$$!" (see my review on the Nikon Super Coolscan 4000ed for back ground)
The average consummer may look at the Perfection's $350 price tag, and cringe...since...
Pros: Reliable, good results Cons: Expensive, a bit slow for transparencies.
This is a great flatbed scanner for professionals and consumers alike. In flatbed mode, it is very fast and provides great results. I'm using it connected to my Mac via firewire under OSX. There is an Epson Twain driver that works under OSX with this...
Pros: High quality flat bed scanner. Decent pricing. Cons: Negative scans were a disappointment. The colors were not accurate.
I was initally very impressed. This is a great flatbed scanner for reflective images.
I then moved on to scanning medium format negatives from my wedding and was disappointed with the colors. I guess I have to do some calibration to try to...
I bought this scanner as... by kilgore_dt3000 ,Jun 24 '02
I bought this scanner as an upgrade to my HP 4470c, because of the increased resolution as well as the (max) 4 by 9 neg scanner. The price seemed a little high, but it had functions I sorely needed. I used the scanner for a couple weeks, scanned probably 500 negatives. My experience with this product was horrible. I had to re-scan many of the images 4, 5, or more times due to inconsistent scanning. Images would come out dark, light, or completely unviewable. Many times the scanner would only scan half of the image. I would make adjustments and it didn't seem to help. Sometimes it would work, sometimes it wouldn't. The capable resolution is awesome, but scan times even at medium resolutions are horrible (with a usb connection, a 4 by 5 neg at 300dpi took 3 minutes). It's a newer model, so maybe in a few months Epson will get the bugs worked out of this scanner. For now, don't buy it.
Extremely pleased with the quality of scans, especially slides, and easy operation and many features and options. Fast using USB 2. Important to read instructions to get the most out of it and to avoid problems, eg: uncheck Thumbnail Preview to avoid clipping slide image. Some software problems using it on XP: corrupting Photoshop Elements.

As a professional photographer and digital artist, I've finally found an affordable, high-quality, high-speed flatbed scanner that also scans a wide variety of film and transparencies. The feature set and Silverfast AI software is a definite pleasure. Be aware, though, that you'll need a USB 2.0 port to take advantage of its very fast scan speeds. The scanner's color accuracy is very high, as is its versatility. It comes with several plastic pre-sized holders for various film types up to and including medium-format. The scanner lid has a built-in lamp for illuminating film (negatives or positives). The lamp is four inches wide by eleven inches long. You can forego the use of the plastic templates and put a film negative or positive directly on the glass flatbed if you have a very old, odd-size negative.
An outstanding product!
Kilgore obviously got a defective... by jolli107_dt3000 ,Oct 21 '02
Kilgore obviously got a defective one and should return it. If you have only USB 1.1 you will experience slow scans because the amount of data transferred with a high quality scan is huge. You need FireWire or USB to get the top performance of this scanner.
My expectations were exceeded. I never thought I could get a printer capable of producing top quality slide and print scans for under $1000. An incredible bargain for under $400 including shipping. It is not a great document scanner with the included software, but this is not an issue for me as I'm primarily a photographer.
Great performance on Macs and PC's with FireWire or USB 2. On Macs installation and use couldn't be simpler, no great problems with installation on Windows XP PC's.
As received, it would not work with Mac OS 10.2; no problem with OS 10.1. Check the ratings anywhere on the net and you will see almost nothing but 5's. I'm buying another one to take to work. Buy one - you won't be disappointed.
