The Power of PowerTouch (and How it Stacks Up Against LeapPad)

by mizgnomer Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Feb 07 '04
Pros: Interactive books make learning fun. Touch-sensitive technology and automatic page recognition.
Cons: Not many books from which to choose. Curriculum not as varied as the LeapPad's.
My 2 year has many loves, but two of his favorite things are books and Blue's Clues. Last year my son encountered the F isher Price Learn Through Music System, which you can buy with a Blue's Clues cartridge, and it ...

by hwz1 Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Nov 03 '03
Pros: Easy to use, helps the child learn to read
Cons: Does not assist with pronunciation skills
Yes this is hwz1 actually writing an epinion in the toy area and it is definitely a first for me. No, I have not had kids yet, but I do have a wonderful niece who we all want to get ahead in life and learn language skills at an early age. Hence, my trip ...

PowerTouch Learning System: The Best Toy We've Ever Bought Our Daughter

by jadzia66 Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Feb 12 '06
Pros: Highly educational, fun, sturdy, easy to use, many titles to choose from, auto shut-off
Cons: Battery life not long, some titles hard to find
Our acquisition of the PowerTouch Learning System actually started from a mistake. I sent my husband to K-Mart last year around Easter time to buy some small toys for our then 3 year old's Easter basket. He came home with some very cute things, one of ...

Strong & Easy to Use!

by bella214 , Jun 07 '07
Pros: No corded pen, Easy to learn to use, Plenty of activities on every page!
Cons: Not enough age appropriate books and the books are expensive.
I bought this a while ago and sold it to buy my son a leap pad when he turned 4 and I regret it. The power touch was great! It didn't have a pen on a cord for my son to drag it around by, and it didn't mess up the sounds or pages. It was easy to turn on ...

Questionable Purpose in these kind of units..

by bellyman , Nov 29 '03
Pros: Themes available (Sesame Street - due to exclusive rights); auto-page sense
Cons: Use of finger; Lack of headset jack; Minimal books at this time
FD: I do not own the PowerTouch nor the LeapFrog LeapPad system but I wanted to provide feedback to everyone thinking of either unit. (oh shock oh horror) NOTE: a) Age - from 3-8 from what I can tell b) Durability - cannot comment c) ...

Great! Very interactive!
by boolissy ,Jul 21 '05
Pros: No pen required, very interactive, favourite characters like Elmo.
Cons: More room needed in the backpack for books to be stored.
The Powertouch is a fantastic toy! We bought it for our daughter at age 2 and she is still loving it aged 3. It gets used fairly regularly and I would say that we are getting our moneys worth. It comes with two starter books 'School Skills' and 'Ernies Neighbourhood'. I've also bought the 'Clifford' and 'Elmos Noisy Day' books which she enjoys more then the original books as they are longer and more interactive. The pages are full of activities and are really entertaining with voices and sound effects.

There are 8 ways in which to interact with the powertouch.

1)Story- The story is read aloud.

2)Words- Each word is read individually.

3)Phonics- Sounds out how to pronounce a word.

4)Spelling- Spells out the letters in the words.

5)Find- A game where you search for certain objects or words on the pages.

6)Surprise- Can be anything from following a line on the page to selecting items in a certain order or matching items up.

7)Count- Counting objects.

8)Music- Wonderful feature! Music plays when objects are pressed.

Also I have recently purchased the Doras River Adventure book, its our families first Dora purchase and our daughter loves it.

Extraordinary toy!
by jaydensmommy ,Dec 09 '03
Pros: Super easy to use and tons of fun.
Cons: Pages are easily bent, does require adult supervision for those under 3 years
I bought this for my soon to be two year old and I can't say enough great things about it. Usually we stay away from Fisher Price Toys but this is a must-have. This is the best purchase we've made in a long time. This is the easiest to use "Teach Me To Read" toy there is on the market, and believe me, we tried them all before we decided on the Power Touch. This is by far my son's favorite toy. He has learned a ton of new things and has a great time doing it. Great learning tool for ages 2 and up but does require supervision.

Ok, but no Leapster
by waajo9 ,Dec 29 '03
Pros: nice design easy to use
Cons: less features than Leapster Not as fun overall
This is good but comparing it with Leapfrog's toys, the Powertouch does not do a great job. It's not any easier and there are far fewer features to this than Leapfrog's.

But they are all learning toys so that's a plus.

I love it! It is well made and well thought-out!
by mangotree ,Dec 08 '04
Pros: Easy to use! Durable!
Cons: none
I bought this for my 3-year-old daughter. This toy is not made by those cheap plastic material and yet it is still light weight enough for my daughter to carry it with her. There is a couple times she dropped this toy onto the hard wood floor while carrying it and it still works. It is very user friendly. Changing the books and cartridges is easy enough for her to do it herself. The great big plus of this toy over the leapfrog is that she can start having fun with this system instantly with her fingers, as opposed to using a pen to always click on the green go circle to start. Overall, I would consider this a great toy for children under 4.
