When my clients tried to fax drawings from a standard Canon office class laser fax all day long, it would not work in any mode. I tested it with my old Brother machine and the fax received automatically without trouble. The print quality was not very good. The Canon machine was a 7500 in use over 4 years. The Canon machine worked well with the Brother fax machine. The phone line is clean because I am only a mile from the phone company switch office. I purchased this machine based on HP's reputation hoping for a reliable machine. The dealer, PCNation, would not take it back in return the same day I installed it because they keep their prices low by not accepting any returns. I was told to call the manufacturer's tech support. Technically it works, just not with professional fax machines. The HP tech support line spent an hour on it. Works with their own fax machines, but not with others. Look elsewhere for a machine that receives from all brands.

Pros: Simple to use. Easy to figure out. Works for FAXes and to make copies.
Cons: No tray to catch received FAXes or copies. Can't copy small receipts.

This is about the 6th FAX machine I've owned. I purchase something simple and use it for a few years until it doesn't work anymore. I also use it as a copy machine.

After trying a multi-function machine, which I ended up returning to the store, I went with this machine.

It's worked fine for the past six months. It was easy to set up and easy to figure out. I did have a little problem with setting it up to use on a line shared with a telephone, but after some tinkering and a visit to the HP website, that's been resolved.

Pros: Print is satisfactory, good memory and fast enough for my needs. The price was right.
Cons: Phone interference. Wish the LCD was tilted up so you could read it better.

I purchased the HP 1040 on the insistence of my Boss. I receive faxes once per week 8-11 pages. Send one fax/week
1-2 pages. So far the machine works fine and does what it was purchased for. I have had problems with it interfering with normal in-comming calls. I currently have it on FX receive mode (Auto was a nightmare) and keep it on "7 rings to answer" except the day I am expecting the in-comming faxes. On that day I drop it to 4. I have used most of the features of the machine with no problems although I am still on the learning curve.
I am satisfied with the machine for the price and would recommend it. As stated above, I haven't completely solved the problem with interference with normal in-comming phone calls but otherwise I am very happy with the machine.
