Pros: Price, Standard amenities, Easy to drive. Cons: Ho-hum styling, Third row seating should match the quality of the 2nd row. The Bottom Line: Better than the Passport, but still could use some major improvements.

Pros: Passenger and cargo space, interior style, flat cornering, value Cons: Vague steering, front seats lack contour, gear selector often blocked The Bottom Line: A stylish, roomy, and versatile interior makes this the best choice for many SUV buyers. For those who prefer sharp handling, Honda still has some work to do.
The Japanese were slow to react to the rapid growth in SUV sales, but now that they have they are offering a number of excellent products. Honda was especially slow to develop trucks, and especially large trucks, but for the 2003 model year it is ...

Pros: Lots of storage space; Holds up to eight passengers Cons: Rear seat makes for a tight squeeze; Exterior lacks distinction The Bottom Line: Honda Pilot has a few minor flaws. But overall, it's a solid entry into the SUV market
Just a few years ago, Honda entered the SUV market with a vehicle known as the Honda Passport. This SUV was intended to compete with the Explorers and Blazers of the automotive world, but it wasn't a distinctly Honda product. This year, Honda decided to...

Pros: Based on Honda Odyssey and Acura MDX, it should set the standard for SUV safety. Cons: More expensive and hard to find than some competition. Won't fit 8 adults in comfort. The Bottom Line: Even as a first year model, Pilot should be on the short list for any safety-conscious family that needs an SUV instead of a minivan, wagon or sedan.
Many people have concerns about the safety of Sport Utility Vehicles. It seems like there is a news report, consumer advisory or investigation almost daily about SUV safety. In particular, rollovers are a serious risk and among the most deadly...

Pros: Interior styling, build quality, safety, comfort, ride, power, mileage (for an SUV this size), reliability. Cons: Road noise, rear glass does not open or slide. The Bottom Line: The best SUV I could find in the market after 7 months of research and testing all SUVs. Ideally suited for city and highway driving (the type you really do).
I bought the Pilot on the first day that it came out. I have the Evergreen EX-L (leather) with a saddle interior. I bought this color because I was looking for the beige interior (looks very expensive). Only Green and Gold come with the beige interior....

Pros: Drives Nicely Cons: Makes a noise and inflicts vibrations on fuel system The Bottom Line: Honda has to fix their problems before assuring it customer a quality product.
The Vehicle presents a loud noise and vibration on the gas tank when the fuel level is between 50 to 85% full.
I brought up the issue to Honda soon after I purchased the vehicle. Honda replied in writing that the problem is normal.

Pros: Honda reliability. Attention to detail. Exceptionally smooth ride. Sun visor extensions! Cargo capacity. Safety. Cons: Shifter too low. Lacking heated seats and mirrors. Automirror and cargocover should be standard . The Bottom Line: It's simple: value, utility and safety. I'm VERY happy with my purchase (hey, I even went $1200.00 over my intended target price for this one!). Honda's right on the mark.
The quest: find the best SUV available with a target price of $30,000.00 (US). It took nearly a month, many test drives, numerous conversations with car owners and car salesmen, and perusing the classifieds for resale prices of various make vehicles....

Pros: GAS MILEAGE / CARGO ROOM HANDLING/ RELIABILITY BEING A HONDA Cons: BODY STYLE IS VERY BASIC AND SUSPENSION IS NOT VERY GOOD FOR A SUV
The Bottom Line: If looking for a moderatly priced, fuel-efficient, japanese suv look elsewhere. better off buying the Hyundai Santa Fe which is cheaper and even sportier looking(CANT BEAT WARRANTY EITHER)
Honda coninues to be a solid car to buy no matter what type of automobile. Yet I for one am not to impressed with the boring body style of the pilot. It looks like many other competing japanese suvs but underperforms them as well as American suvs. The...

2003 Honda Pilot Transmission is Trash

Pros: Advice: Plan to trade before power train warranty runs out. Cons: Trashy Transmission on 2003 Honda Pilot
Transmission in Pilot went out at less than 100,000 miles. Pilot was taken in on recall for transmission when notification was received. Evidently it was a cheap recall. Transmission had been serviced as per maintenance schedule. This is a $2600 fix which I don't have the money to pay..

Great Honda SUV

Author's Product Rating:

Pros: Honda badge and reliability. Cons: None.
The Honda Pilot is a wonderful SUV. It is Honda's 1st true SUV built by Honda, and you can tell it. It has been rock solid since we bought it over a year ago. We now have 30,000 miles on it and it is still going strong. Our Pilot averages 20mpg in town and 23mpg on the road. Our old Mountaineer couldn't touch that. We have had regular maintenance done and it is just as solid and reliable as the day we drove it off of the Darrell Waltrip Honda lot. All of the ergonomics are very well thought out, the seats are comfortable, the stereo is just right.

Pros: plenty of storage, smooth ride, 3rd seat is great Cons: gear shift is awkward to use, but you get use to it.
I drove from one side of the country to the other in mine & it was great! My two cats and I relocated from the Pacific Northwest to Florida in January.. some of the summits we traveled through were covered with ice and snow. The vehicle handled wonderful! I traded my small SUV in on the Pilot because I wanted more room. I could not have asked for a better vehicle. The storage is excellent and plenty of it. Some people don't like the look, but I do. The dealer did not do me any favors on the price, but that's a different review..:)
The vehicle I have was made in Canada and imported (legally) to the US, so I have some features that are not on US models. I have heated side mirrors and they worked great on the cold days. Then I moved to Florida...and they have not been used here.
I am extremely happy with the vehicle and would recommend it to anyone.

Love my 03 Pilot EX

Author's Product Rating:

Pros: Comfortable seats, excellent leg and head room, great cargo capacity, decent mileage considering size. Cons: No daytime running lights or auto-locking doors; small 3rd row seat; noisy at higher speeds
We are true Honda lovers, and have owned an 89 Civic and a 2001 CR-V, which we traded for this Pilot in 2002, just after we saw the first ones on the road. My 2003 Pilot now has 104,000 miles on it, and it is still going strong. Aside from new tires, a battery and consistent oil changes, our "Red" has asked nothing of us. She's sporty enough to keep me interested, she's reliable enough to keep my husband's approval, she's stable and safe in virtually every driving scenario I've managed to get her into, and she's a lady through it all. In a society where SUVs reign supreme, the Pilot is a sensible choice.

THE CAR IS GOOD, THE DEALERS ARE TERRIBLE

Pros: The vehicle itself ! Cons: The dealer network and the cost of routine maintenance.
I have had my 2003 Honda for 31,000 miles and the car is good, but the dealers are awful. When you bring it in for service they want almost $400.00 for a 30,000 mile service. They won't fix warranty items. They want to sell you some sort of oil additive when the car is almost brand new and not recommended by Honda. My advice, stay away from Honda for the above reasons. Every time you have to go to the dealer it is a fist fight to get a fair shake.

Pilot or Passenger? You make the choice!

Pros: Drivability, Safety, capacity, and of course that awsome V-Tec technology. Cons: I can't watch my flip down LCD system from the pilot seat.
I definetly choose pilot. This 6cyl., Vtec enhanced beauty handles like a laptop in the hands of IT. Total Control.
My intentions; in the seat of this baby on a test drive, was not to get too excited. Too late for that, because by the time I hit the accelorator; all the salesman had to do is show me where to sign. So, for all you SUV lovers out there, forget the Tahoe, forget the unmentioned left overs in the market. Just get into the Pilot once, and I guarantee; you will fly out of your seat to get a chance at owning one.
Thank you Honda. You did it again.

Repeat Honda Buyer--Highly Recommend Pilot EX!
by sjnewark
Dec 10 '03
Author's Product Rating:
Recommended: Yes
Pros: Safety, roominess, HONDA reliability, cargo space is incredible with both back rows folded away Cons: Handling is slightly compromised due to the size of the Pilot--worth it for safety.
I LOVE my Pilot-EX. I purchased it Oct. 2002, a 2003 model of course. They were hard to get in my area, but I found an EX with fabric seats. I opted for "AFTER MARKET LEATHER" and HIGHLY recommend it. The factory leather is perforated and the model I test drove had very visible wear on its leather backseats. I was turned off by that. The after market leather was the solution. It was ~$1200 extra, but the EX-L was ~$500 more than the EX. I spent an extra $700 and it is well worth it. Additionally, the roominess cannot be beat! I have had 7 adults in my Pilot and all were comfy. The safety is supreme for a SUV. I traded my college Honda Civic EX for my Pilot and absolutely love the Honda reliability. I travel TONS and have 45K on my Pilot already--so far, so good.
