Pros: Nice structure, very appealing black cherry fruit flavor, medium bodied, ready for consumption. Cons: Becoming difficult to find; I found no faults.

M G Vallejo Merlot, 1998...is it supposed to taste like this? by gronhovde ,Dec 07 '03
Pros: none Cons: Dusty, old flavor.
As part of a continuing quest to sample wines from the California region, I purchased a bottle of the 1998 G M Vallejo Merlot for around $6. Merlot is a favorite of mine, but this bottle was a big disappointment.
After uncorking the bottle, I examined the cork as usual. I noticed a broad 3/16" wine stain, and the cork aroma left a dusty, old smell. This was also noticeable as I sampled a few sips after letting the bottle breathe for 15 minutes.
If this is an example of the cork spoiling the wine, I apologize. This is my only experience with this brand. After 3 sips my wine sampling evening was over, and I ended up dumping the bottle out. The bottle I purchased was undrinkable. I'd be a little surprised if their wine was meant to taste as my bottle did. You shouldn't expect much from a $6 bottle of wine, but this was entirely disappointing. Sadly, I've enjoyed cheaper bottles of wine.
