Runs like hot mercury...

by meepstah , Jul 17 '01
Pros: Very quiet, doesn't need fuel oil, haven't had any problems.
Cons: Very heavy, more expensive than a 2-cycle
Hey all, long time no post...been really busy this summer, and recently I took my little inflatable boat out to East Harbor for some fun in the sun...Reminded me of how much I like my engine, so I figured I'd put a little blurb up here about it.

The Silent Big Foot Aproaches!

by AcidTouch7 , Jun 23 '00
Pros: Silent operation, clean, efficient
Cons: Cost of a 4-stroke is more than a 2-stroke, but the efficiency will make up the difference. Also weight. They don't call it "Big Foot" for nothing! This problem should not matter on most boats.
Wow!!!! This thing is silent! Never have I operated such a quiet out board, well except for my electric trolling!-) I first had the little monster on a small hydroplane, for those of you unformiliar with the term "hydroplane," it...

Where's the Power?

by Moschop , Nov 26 '00
Pros: Easy start; reliable
Cons: Lacks power
When my father decided it was time to upgrade his 1970 something Sea Horse before it started causing him real trouble, he decided to stay with the company who had always provided him with a good product throughout his previous experiences. So this summer...

Too Heavy For My 14 Ft. Aluminum Fisher

by tallenhatton , May 31 '07
Pros: Quiet, and you don't mix the fuel.
Cons: Too heavy for a 14' V Aluminum Fisher.
Sure it's quiet, it's a four stroke, you don't mix fuel and that's handy, and you pay more for it too. I bought one and a 14' V aluminum Fisher boat and the dealer assured me the two were a match. Well the Bigfoot weighs 125 lbs. and that on the back of ...

Great Trolling Motor

by drachir , Oct 24 '00
Pros: Smooth- Quiet-Quiet-Quiet
Cons: A bit on the heavy side
I purchased this Mercury 4 stroke outboard motor, about 8 months ago. It is by far the smoothest and quietest trolling motor I have ever owned. I have had 1 Honda (9.9 hp), and 2 Mercury 2 strokes (6 hp, & 8 hp). I must say that all of my Mercury...

Mercury 9.9 Bigfoot

by neicher , Dec 06 '00
Pros: Quiet, lightweight, powerful , fuel efficient
Cons: Engine cover is expensive to replace and easily damaged if dropped
Mercury Marine is the largest manufacturer of personal watercraft engines in the world. It has an unsurpassed reputation for quality and performance. It is true that the Japanese imports are currently popular, however due consideration should be given...

Like my Yamaha better

by bsme , May 03 '01
Pros: Quite
Cons: Initial Price, power, and fixing Costs
When it was time to add a kicker motor to my Boston Whaler I thought I would get a motor that could be easily serviced. My main motor is a Yamaha which I love there are just no dealers for service in my area. Even though the price was high I thought I...

Not a happy customer
by chackmol ,Aug 30 '09
Pros: Quiet when it runs
Cons: Quiet most of the time because it DOESN'T run!
When it runs, it runs great... WHEN it runs.  I have had a hard time since I bought my motor getting it to crank.  One day it cranks on the first pull and purrs like a kitten.  Other days I pull until my arms are rubber and all I get is tired.  Also having problem with gas contaminating the oil.  LOTS of gas!

New 2005 Model - A Bad Decision
by orlanth99 ,Jun 04 '05
Pros: Quite, good on gas
Cons: Customer Service is a Joke
I decided to bite the bullet and buy a new kicker for my boat, after spending a fair amount of time the choice was down to Mercury or Yamaha. Mercury has a promo on and my dad just had a Yamaha die in it's third year of operation, so I went with Mercury. Big mistake, the shift shaft rusted right out in the first month of operation and would no longer shift in reverse. I am currently waiting to see what the dealer is going to do about it. I will follow up after the dealer looks at it. Believe it or not the dealer made me book an appointment as they are busy. Needless to say I am p_issed.

UPDATE

Well after making me wait a week the dealer informs someone mistakenly installed a non-stainless steel shift shaft on this engine and Mecury will only replace the part and not exchange the motor. So now I will have to wait at least another week for the part to be shipped. Given this is a brand new motor and they installed a faulty part you would think they would exchange it or at least ship the part overnight.
