Pros: Great sounding unit. Easy to configure and setup. Tons of ports (allows expansion for years) Cons: Remote sux. Its a universal learning remote but its operation is cumbersome and cludgey.
This is an absolutely amazing receiver. I had been using a Yamaha receiver since 98 but needed to upgrade because I didnt have the right combination of digital inputs and video outputs. I was going to stick with Yamaha, as I think they are great, ...

Pros: Plenty of inputs, easy to setup, awesome on-screen menu Cons: Warranty only valid if receiver is purchased through an official onkyo dealer
I bought the SR800 around Christmas of 2002. There's a WIDE range of prices out there ($750 - $1000) so do your research. Make sure the seller is an authorized Onkyo reseller otherwise the warranty will be null and void. The design is very sleak an ...

Pros: Highly configurable.
Great, clean sound at all volumes.
Phono jack Cons: Bass and treble settings adjust in 2dB increments, not 1dB.

awesome, even after 4 years
by badhras ,Jan 20 '07
Pros: Awesome - even after 4 years of use Cons: no auto-tuning, no TV menuing through component video
I purchased Onkyo TX-SR800 7.1 receiver 4 years ago for console gaming and DVD movies. Even now, the amp works terrifically. I've never had a reliability issue with it at all. In addition to the reliability, the specs for range and THD are awesome. The only things I wish it had are as follows:
[1] an auto-tuning feature (i know, i just need to pay more)
[2] the on-screen/TV menus to work through the component video, instead of just on S-Video/composite

Great receiver!
by polkaudio22 ,Dec 09 '03
Pros: Lots of inputs/outputs, easy-to-use on screen menu, sounds great Cons: A little pricey
This is the first high end receiver I have ever bought. Before, I always got cheap Sonys. Now I know what great sound is like. The number of in/outs is phenominal. I have all the following hooked up to the receiver: TV, DVD, VCR, Beta player, Hi8 player, TiVo DVR, Laserdisc player and bose surround sound system. It was actually a breeze to set up. The on screen menu is great. You are able to customize EVERYTHING. I bought mine at Circuit City because I like the extended warranty they offer (ever since I bought my laptop their which failed so many times they just gave me a brand new laptop). I probably could have gotten it cheaper online but oh well.

Purchased this unit after returning...
by terryb_dt3001 ,Mar 05 '03
Purchased this unit after returning a horrible sounding Harman Kardon AVR525. This unit has 7 amplifiers built in ample power to run my surround sound setup. Video properties are excellent. (I am actually able to channel my video inputs through the receiver with S Video cabling without any degradation)Sound is amazing if you like a warm rich sound with ample highs and plenty of midrange warmth along with powerful bass. Setup is just a little cumbersome, but very rewarding. The remote is truly an all purpose learning remote eliminating the need for several remotes lying around. Also a big plus is this unit is THX Select rated, which gives you an added plus on the home theater side. Overall I would advise to purchase this unit if you want a very good receiver at a decent price for a 7 channel, THX Select unit.
