Stellar Little Camera!

by bassman32 , Nov 04 '04
Pros: Clarity, Ease-of-use, universal, battery-life, features, stunning lens, great LCD
Cons: Hard to find battery if not included, along with lens cap
I've owned my LC40 for over a year now. Every moment has been great. For a digital camera its universatility and its ability to make every really bad photographer into a seemingly good one. It has the fallowing settings. Auto, P/A/S, Close-up, ...

Panasonic changed my view

by frainke Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, May 27 '03
Pros: Very realistic photos
Cons: Zoom not large enough
I absolutely love the Panasonic Lumix digital camera. I have never in my life seen a camera produce such professional quality pictures. I have used my Lumix in just about every light condition possible, even in the rain! Its amazing clarity will leave...

Great camera, with a great lens at a great price

by casique2000 , Apr 15 '04
Pros: Leica lens, long battery life, 3x Optical Zoom, 4 Megapixels for the price of 2
Cons: Just a little too big for a pocket
I stumbled across this camera while searching on e-bay for affordable 3-4 Megapixel cameras and couldn't be happier. Initially I was looking for cameras that used SD or MMC storage, as they're interchangable with other electronic products I have. ...

Awesome Awesome Camera!
by gurlwithapen ,Jul 30 '07
Pros: inexpensive by digi cam standards, especially for the leica lense.
Cons: a tad bigger than most digital cameras--but those cameras are also crappy!
I have had my camera now for 3 years. It has survived 3 out of country excursions, 100's of nights out at clubs, numerous U.S. vacations...the leica lense makes it seem as if it is a higher megapixel cam than it really is. i constantly have people trying to buy mine from me.
while i watch my friends buy new digi cams every year or so, i have had my little safety net all along!

Color rendition is poor: tends to the red
by igalp ,Nov 04 '05
Pros: Sharp pictures, quite good manual control
Cons: Poor colour rendering, poor movie quality
This camera gives a greate sharpness of the picture. It also deals very well with twilight.
Though, the real disadvantage is color rendition: the picture which seems perfect on camera's LCD, tends to red on computer and on print. Green objects (grass, etc.) seem absolutely non-natural. Poor handling of colors kills all the fun.
Also, movies are of poor quality and are jumping each 1 second.

Excellent Camera at the price and Wonderful Photo Quality
by jokerwilde ,Mar 08 '04
Pros: Light, solid construction, excellent lens, photo quality and price
Cons: None
As a former professional photographer who still shoots on a regular basis, I have quite an assortment of cameras to chose from. I wanted to start shooting digital because I was dragged at having to scan any photo that I wanted to email. Even though some magazines and website recommended other cameras, I was drawn to the Lumix DMC-LC40 because of the lens manufacturer as well as the fairly large digital display on the camera's back. I like the balance and feel of this camera as well as the many options (from point and shoot to aperture and shutter speed controls to macro). The construction is solid yet lightweight. I recommend buying a larger SD because like almost all digital cameras, this one isn't shipped with a big enough SD. At the highest resolutions, I've made outstanding prints up to 8 x 10 with great shadow detail, color and clarity. I can't recommend this camera highly enough and wonder why it isn't usually tested since it is a wonderful piece of electronic gear.

This camera makes me happy
by suebidobido ,Aug 29 '06
Pros: Great photos indoor/out, easy to use, quality camera
Cons: Not really a con to me but it is a bulky camera
I really think this is a high quality camera, and at a great price for what you get. Pictures are great quality for novice and pro, the Leica lens speaks for itself, we use the recording feature all the time and even the customer service at Panasonic (needed for user error) was superb

a Mixed bag
by joecap ,Jan 14 '08
Pros: Sharp and wide aperture lens, fast shooting, great battery life, well built.
Cons: Poor sensor noise, iso 200-400 not usable, terrible autofocus, must callibrate white balance, no firmware upgrade.
I am a semi pro in photography and have used this for 3 years as well as other digicams(p880 Kodak, z730 Also Kodak) Here is the good and bad. The first thing that I have found after 3 years of pink photos is that you MUST manually calibrate the white balance. Look at the manual under white balance, set by pointing it to snow or a pure white paper outdoors, and the pink is gone. Use it in program mode after this is done and the colors are fine.
I love the sharp and fast lens but the sensor on this camera is third rate and limits enlargements to 8x10. You must use the spot metering mode since any other settings confuse the camera and are unpredictable. The battery life is Fantastic and the camera is durable. It is no Kodak in terms of image quality or colors, but follow the steps and it can be a good everyday point and shoot with great battery life and fast shooting at ISO 100.

I must be missing something!
by fifthofautumn ,Mar 20 '04
Pros: Substantial feel with solid grip, better than average battery life
Cons: poor auto settings, white balance, LCD color rendition, and digital noise
I found this camera to be highly over-rated. I make my living in the photo industry and have unique opportunities to test many new products. I often test 2 or 3 cameras side by side, and output prints from the latest Fuji Frontier commercial machines. Although I believe it is possible to achieve decent images with this camera, the camera itself seems to resist these efforts by default. The auto settings, LCD display and color rendition leave alot to be desired.

Panasonic Lumix LC40. Fantastic Camera!
by luzrandy ,Feb 13 '04
Pros: Wonderful lens. Easy to use. Lightweight and compact. Not too expensive.
Cons: None
I usually shoot professional photos with a Fuji S2 Pro. It is kind of big and bulky and way too expensive to take on vacations and for casual photography. So, my wife gave me this Panasonic Lumix LC40 for Christmas. I got it because the lens is made by Leica. WOW AM I IMPRESSED!!!!!!! This camera is sharper than my Fuji with a Nikon 60mm macro if you can believe it! Of course it only has 4 mega pixels, so it can't compare with the 12 million that my Fuji has, but for 11x14 prints or so, it is just fantastic. Also, it only has a 3x zoom, which for me is fine because with more than that you need a tripod or you will get a lot of camera shake and fuzzy pictures. I couldn't recommend a camera more highly. If you can find one of these, I suggest that you get it!

by running_bill_dt3000 ,Feb 07 '03
The larger lens is great in low light, it outperforms the "minis". The rechargable battery lasts forever, as advertised, and takes a full recharge quickly. (no AA's to die too quickly) Spare battery is expensive, but I've found it to be unnecessary to buy a spare due to the excellent life. Easy to grip right-side handle with all of the controls within easy reach of the shooting finger. The secure digital cards are conveniently small. The box is well accessoried with all of the needed cords. Multiple modes of download & playback including television. I do not believe that you can buy a better 4 megapixel camera for the money. The flash could be larger, but I've had no issues. I do like the flash's pop-up feature. Well designed camera overall. If I were starting over, I would rebuy this camera in an instant.

I've owned some of the best Japanese film cameras and was about to buy a high end Olympus digital. I was convinced that Japanese lenses were the best. Leica was always just too expensive... and really, could Leica optics really be so much better? Absolutely with out a doubt, YES! The difference jumps out at you in sharpness and in color rendition. To me, the lens is everything. No need to look any longer, this is the one to buy!

by rickp_dt3000 ,Sep 03 '02
After using a 1 megapixel camera for a few years this new camera was greatly appreciated, both in quality and ease of use. The endless available adjustments allow for professional results after the short functionality learning curve is crossed. The DMC LC40 is probably one of the better cameras I looked at for the price range.

by ricky_dt3003 ,Dec 21 '02
Camera is great but 50% of usibility is lost because this camera has an undersized flash according to Panasonic. That's what their rep at the care ctr. told me!!! And had an attitude about it also.. Did many A-B tests against much cheaper Fuji and Olympus cams and the Lumix flash failed dismally!!! One star!!!

by denniskweh_dt3000 ,Dec 01 '02
hi guys Just bought the LC40 in Singapore. Excellent camera as I was shopping around for the Olympus 730UZ but ended up with the LC40. I tried both at the camera shop before buying. The factors that made me chose LC40 are: 4 M pixels yes! leica lens and ergonomically better than the Olympus in terms of weight, viewfinder and the position of the flash which made the latter cumbersome if one intends to add on a lens adapter and lens later. The LC40 simply put is a class above the good Olympus for the price category below US$700. I managed to add on 128 MB SD card to the LC40 and immensely pleased with this. Also, the battery life is superb as I am still using more than 60 shots with LCD on all the time and the battery is still in full power!
