This bike is a disappointment. Although this bike was at the lower end price wise, I paid the equivalent of $500 plus accessories (I live in Finland where the cost of living is higher and Raleigh being an import item) and expected better for my money....
I purchased my C40 late in the season last year. It is a reasonably priced bike with many nice features.
The feature that impresses me the most is the comfort of the bike. I ride everyday for about an hour with no discomfort. The seat is comfortable despite the narrow width. The suspension is a spine-saver.
I believe this bike will satisfy most riders. It is good for touring and general cardio fitness.

Pros: The front fork and seat are suspended and the seat is made of pliable gel. Cons: The only real drawback is it's weight relative to road bikes.
I bought my C40 in early September 2004. I recently had a tailbone injury and was looking at something more comfortable than my Cannondale. The C40 is definitely it! Very comfortable on a middle age body.
Other advantages are a very adjustable set of handlebars and a long wheelbase compared to just about any other bike I've seen. It's 12" longer than a road bike of the same size which contributes to the comfort. The brakes are second to none.
The extra length and suspension are the culprits on it's hefty weight, but the payback in comfort is worth it. I have problems keeping the seat height adjusted...it tends to sink no matter how hard I tighten it. I've also managed to break three rear spokes over the last year. No idea why.
Some criticize the comfort/hybrids as being slow compared to a road bike. Personally, I don't see this. I'm only in fair shape, but can keep up with the young/thin/fit/Lycra-from-head-to-toe crowd on a fast 20 mile ride. 24 gears help here.
I wanted a Raleigh Grand Prix, or at least a solid 24 speed road bike. However I got this bike on sale for $250.00, It has an aluminum frame and is a 24 speed. I don't ride professionally so this bike gives me everything I need.
I have heard people say that Hybrids are a little slower, and that might be true. However if you are not a fast rider to begin with, then it doesn't matter much.
I might also add that this is a very comfortable bicycle to ride on.
