Pros: Fascinating to watch it work. Looks cool!
Cons: Looks like it will not last long. Not very intelligent. Limited cleaning capacity.
First one I bought had a problem with the virtual wall unit. Must have had an internal short, because after half an hour it started smoking and I noticed that the batteries were red hot. We exchanged it for another one at the store, but with this one the ...

Wanted to love Roomba, but I don't!

by westonian , Mar 13 '03
Pros: Great concept - love the idea of a vacuum that works unassisted.
Cons: Noisy. Does not do well on thicker carpet. Not terribly sturdy.
I've been so excited to try the Roomba, but I have to report (sadly) that it is not going to work for us. I'd read that the Roomba does not do well on shag or very thick carpet; our carpeting is a medium thickness so I assumed it would be fine....

Cons: Cleaning dust cup and brushes each time, charge is insufficient, scares my rabbit!
I love my Roomba! It was a Christmas gift and one of the best I've ever gotten. I just set it down and off it goes to suck the dirt off my carpets. It does a better job than the upright vacuum I had--the first time I ran it it got tons of hair (mine and ...

Cons: Vacuuming will beat this every time Gets room partially cleaned A bit noisy

Pros: It be used in smaller areas, with minimum furniture and no area rugs.
Cons: Charge not long enough. Dirt bins not large enough. Gets hung up on area rugs.
Has trouble getting from floor to area rugs and visa versa.
Charge is short. Requires some time preparing room - removing cords, hanging drapes, bed skirts, etc., from floor, rearranging furniture so it doesn't get stuck between things, etc. Slightly noisy. Handle is not easy to grab as they say when you want to stop it in a hurry. Debris bins are small. Require several emptyings if you are doing a large room. Also, for a large room, recharge is necessary before finishing room.

First of all, the Roomba requires some pre-cleaning: any spare cords, rug tassles, etc. need to be removed from the floor so the roomba doesn't get stuck or jammed. Secondly, cleaning up the vacuum is a very messy job. It's bagless, so when that compartment that "traps" the dirt opens to be cleaned out, a lot of that dirt, dust and grime goes right back into the air...and onto your hands. Once you discount those two factors, this machine has the potential to be a great, convenient timesaver. Until then, however, I would save money and frustration and stick to the old fashioned way of vacuuming.

Roomba Intelligent FloorVac Vacuum
by reviewer8 ,Mar 04 '04
Pros: cleans pretty well, easy to use, effortless
Cons: trouble maneuvering between objects, needs more than one virtual wall unit to clean some areas
This is a great unit. You can turn it on and walk away it is effortless to use. I found that this unit picks up pretty well. It has some trouble picking up dog hair. The Roomba does get caught up in some areas. It has some trouble maneuvering between objects. If you don't have 2 virtual wall units the Roomba can't clean small areas if they can't be totally blocked off. You can buy an additional virtual wall unit. You can select between three room sizes, small, medium and large. The Roomba stops automatically. I bought this for a family member who is confined to a wheelchair and has difficulty pushing a vacuum cleaner. It is good for this because it is light enough to lift and the on/off switches are easily accessible.

Works Ok, Not very durable
by mcpres ,Sep 11 '03
Pros: Runs unattended, gets under a lot of furniture.
Cons: Price, charging time, durability.
I've been using the Roomba vacuum now for over two months, and it has its advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages:
Reduces the frequency of normal vacumming. Does a fairly good job and can get under a lot of furniture that otherwise would have been missed. After the first couple of times vacuuming, you can leave it unattended.

Disadvantages:
Cost is high compared to a standard vacuum which you will also need. Battery takes 12hrs to charge, so you really only get 1 use per day. Pet hair can frequently get caught on the wheels and internally.

It's the cutest little thing...but it works!!
by cheri_jones ,Jan 16 '04
Pros: Cute, lightweight, goes under furniture; VERY entertaining for pets (I kinda like watching it too!)
Cons: The dust cup is small, but hey, for what it does,I can live with that!
Wow, finally something that pretty much does what they claim it can do! I love my RAINBOW vacuum and use it once a week...but the ROOMBA takes care of everything in the "inbetween" times! Once you get the "ins and outs" of what you need to prepare the room, you can just turn it on and let it go! It's great for my hardwood and tile floors and the oriental style rug. The are absolutely right about the rugs with the fringes...they pose a problem, so I just pick them up before I start...no more problem! I bought my Roomba from HSN and it came with the "quick charge" battery charger and an extra "invisible wall"...all for $228...so I figured it was a pretty good deal. The quick charger is super....charges the Roomba in just a few hours!

All-in-all, I love it...it does what they claim!

Robots for the masses
by ephdfw ,Nov 09 '03
Pros: Small, automatic, cleans under furniture, excellent job on hard floors
Cons: Scares the dog, have to "prep" the room
Bought this little sucker (literally) several months ago. It performs as promised. It is necessary to make the room Roomba-friendly (no clutter, cords or wires on the floor). Then set it and let it go. It does a great job on hard floors (wood, tile, etc.) and a good job on carpet. On carpet you do need to use the big vaccuum every so often, but the Roomba pretty much takes care of hard floors. It's great for getting under the bed, etc. The charge does take a while, but it really doesn't matter - one charge will take care of the floors, then charge until next cleaning time.

Not worth the price
by nstites ,Feb 16 '06
Pros: small
Cons: Isn't random and doesn't pick up much!
I bought this vacuum to save me some time but it is actually taking more time out of my day because I have to go over the areas again with our upright vacuum. The Roomba does not pick up what it should for the price, however my biggest complaint is that its "random" movement is not so random. It basically picks an area and goes around in circles until it runs out of batteries. I have a pretty small apartment and it can't even manage a whole room. In addition, it is not very quiet, especially for an apartment. My recommendation is that you same money and time and buy a regular vacuum!!!

Keeps hair under control
by paigenw ,Sep 09 '04
Pros: easy to operate, painless to maintain
Cons: doesn't respond to verbal commands LOL
This is great for pet hair! I can’t believe what a difference it’s made in our house. We have two long haired dogs, and we used to just throw up our hands and let the lint and dust and hair take over. Now we run the Roomba a couple times a week in each room, and it’s amazing how much cleaner the whole house is. At first the dogs barked whenever they saw it running, but now they give it a sniff and then leave it alone. It’s so nice to be able to just push a button, leave, and come back to a clean floor.

Roomba Review from GadgetGuys.com
by snasta ,Nov 28 '03
Pros: Cleans well
Cons: Long recharging time Small lint bin
With a dog that sheds constantly and big doors and windows that are always open and letting in dust vacuuming is a constant chore around our house. After looking at the specs of the Roomba I decided to give it a try. After trying it out at our house for a few weeks the Roomba works very well.

Overall this gadget worked much better than expected. While it won’t replace the vacuum cleaner at our house, it certainly reduces the number of times I have to drag that big, heavy beast out. I have a feeling this is going to be one of the few gadgets that stays around.

Pros: Ease of use, price
Cons: loud, have to make sure floor is clutter free.
I have a Kirby but still like the Roomba for my hard wood floors, I never sweep anymore, this is a fantastic machine. Have two dogs and it keeps up with getting the hair from under the furniture and when you just don't feel like cleaning you just turn this puppy on and go. It is great.

Rumsfeld The Roomba Cleans Up!
by hnlute ,Dec 13 '03
Pros: Cleans UNDER the furniture, it is easy to clean out, long running time.
Cons: Expensive
We love our Roomba, it performs the light cleanup chore admirably while wandering about, under and around obstacles that would stop a regular vacuum cleaner. It is NOT an industrial strength vac, it picks up all the stuff your broom misses and then some but it will not pick up coins or heavy objects or dirt. It dusts well, it's rotary corner brooms swirl dust and dirt and grit (and HAIR!) into the path of the rotary broom and away it goes. The random pattern will over time cover almost all the surface of a floor from many angles.
The Roomba makes a bit of noise but is not nearly as loud as a standard vacuum, the noise fits the power level. It is easy to clean when done with a room and the charge is sufficient to thoroughly clean 2 large rooms before it'll need recharging.

I love my Roomba
by cflanmac ,Nov 14 '04
Pros: Does a much better job than I can.
Cons: Can't do stair treads, but otherwise he's great.
Why did we buy our Roomba? Seems like a no-brainer: we hate vacuuming. So we brought it home yesterday--it's hard to avoid calling it "him," as he seems like a pet--charged him up, and have been running him around the house.

He is wonderful. He pulled oodles of dirt out of places I thought I'd vacuumed fairly recently; okay, in the last six months. He did better than our Hoover under the bed, and got dirt and dust up from the most difficult spots, in the joints between baseboards and floors, for example.

He inevitably got a mouthful of electrical cords, but stopped before any damage was done. And best of all, for me at least, he is easy to carry up and down stairs, something which can *not* be said of the old vacuum.

Entertain the Ferret and Clean the Floor...at the Same Time!
by larcd8835 ,Oct 02 '04
Pros: Turn it on, leave the house Fun to watch it not fall down the stairs
Cons: Too loud, misses corners, not good at changing hardwood to carpet
I love to vacuum the floor and not be home. I also love to vacuum the floor and be reading. Roomba lets me do this. I turn on the Roomba, and it cleans the floor while I do whatever else I need to do. I don't like to vacuum anyway, but I still want my floors clean. I like that it cleans under the furniture with the furniture still in place. If my ferret is out of her cage, she either follows the Roomba around and tries to figure out what it is, or hops on and rides it. (Yes, I supervise her while she does either.)

I do have problems with the Roomba. It gets stuck going from the hardwood floor to the carpet. Also, the dirt is still left behind in the corners of the room. Finally, the unit has to be cleaned after each use.

Allergy Suffers Beware
by doxke ,Oct 24 '04
Pros: picks up most stuff on hard wood floors
Cons: takes long time to charge, bagless feature means lots of sneezing, time consuming setup/cleanup
I love the convenience of Roomba, but the time I save doing other things is negated by the time I spend 1) emptying the roomba, 2) cleaning the roomba
3) setting up the room so it doesn't eat cords etc 4) its bagless feature means you come in very close contact with all of the dust and junk. My allergies were at their worst during Roomba because I had to touch all of the dust etc when cleaning and emptying the roomba. I do not think that the Roomba should take the place of your regular vacuum or in sweeping, but it is nice in between real vacuums to have things tidied up a bit.

operation problems with the roomba
by echaps1 ,Jul 04 '08
Pros: when working it was very convienient
Cons: Starts and stops every 45 seconds.
Approximately 1 ½ years ago I purchased a i robot roomba. For the first 8 months it worked wonderfully. After that I started having trouble. The people at i-robot worked with me to try and fix the problem. After 2 months of back and forth communication they replaced the i-robot scheduler. The new one worked well for the first month and then the trouble began again. I figured that I may need a new battery, which I purchased. This did not fix the problem. I tried contacting i-robot customer service again, but to no avail. Initially I loved the product, but I found all the problems it gave me was not worth the convenience of the machine. They also suggest ordering a new battery every year.

Roomba VS Two 90lb Labradors
by josh_wilson99 ,Feb 14 '07
Pros: Too many to list. This thing is just a wonderful invention!!
Cons: It's a little noisy, but hey, it's a vacuum cleaner, what do you expect.
It is a constant battle at my house keeping up with 2 90lb labradors and 2500 sq ft of hardwood floors. I have to say I thought the Roomba was a gimmick until I purchased one for myself. This little thing is a life saver!! Not only does it sweep up the endless tumbleweeds of doghair, but it gets under the coffee table, under beds, under the entertainment center, and even in the corners where the stuff collects. I feel like a new person, now I just need to decide what to do with all that time I will not be spending endlessly sweeping my floors. And as far as the dogs go, they are not bothered by the Roomba at all. They just lay there on the floor while it does it's thing. Thank-you Epinions for helping me realize the Roomba is definately not a gimmick, and that it is one of the greatest household cleaning tools out there on the market today. Next step: Scooba - for mopping your floors, cannot wait to try this one out!!!!

Pros: Cute, entertaining, set it and let it go. I love how it calculates the area.
Cons: little noisy, cup fills with husky hair quickly, fiddely getting husky hair out of rollers
Just got it, works great. With a husky who is in the process of shedding his wednesday coat, gearing up for his saturday coat, this is a wonderful little gaffer. I did get the quick charger as that seemed to be most of the complaints. I think this is going to be an excellent, in-between deep cleaning product. I was very impressed with the amount of fine particles of dust that it picked up. I like the way it transitions from the bare bathroom floor and over the bath mats that my full size vac eats.

Pros: Cleans better than my hoover vacuum
Cons: None
I have 3 dogs and a 4,000 sq ft home and this Roomba handles both with no problem. I never thought it would vacuum so well. I love the way it goes back to the charger when it is done. It handles carpets and tile floors with no problems. PS I fired my cleaning lady. Ha I can't wait until next Christmas when my husband gets me the Roomba that washes floors.

Simply amazing and it works great!
by in_calibrator ,Feb 20 '06
Pros: Very easy to use and clean. Fun to watch. Great on hardwood and carpet.
Cons: A tad loud on hardwood floors but its a vacuum cleaner after all.
I was given Roomba as a gift and was very skeptical. After getting it out of the box and simply pressing the "Clean" button Roomba started its job. I was amazed at how well it navigates around chairs, along baseboards, and under beds. It does its job very well. I even tested it by vacuuming the floor with a conventional upright vacuum first and then put Roomba to the task. Its dirt bin was 1/2 full of stuff! It might seem like a toy but it’s really not. People spend $100 on robot dinosaurs that walk around like chickens and growl. Why not spend another $100 or so and get a practical robot that is actually useful!

Good Idea, Not Ready Yet
by niteflyer757 ,Jan 15 '08
Pros: I don't have to vacuum.
Cons: Technical support, battery issues, getting stuck
I purchased my Roomba Red a few years ago. Shortly after I got it, the battery stopped holding its charge. I would charge it for hours, and after only few moments, it would stop. I contacted IRobot who at various times replaced the battery, the charging brick and finally the entire Roomba.

It didn't help. I've had the same problem with the new Roomba. They replaced the battery for the new one, and the new one eventually started doing the same thing. Then I went out and bought a new battery and still have the same problem.

Technical assistance gave me various instructions on fixing the problem--none of which worked. Now they're telling me that it's no longer under warranty, so too bad.

I would suggest that you avoid this product. Even when it works, it has a terrible habit of getting stuck under things like sofas or shelves. You basically have to block it from getting under anything or it will get stuck and stop.

My robotic second child!
by jlundquist1 ,Jan 05 '05
Pros: It works as good as the manuf. says! No vacuuming!
Cons: can't set it and leave, but you can do other things than vacuum.
We have 3 cats and a dog, a house that is half tile/half carpet, and a two year old. With some Christmas money we bought a Roomba Discovery. I was skeptical but this thing is awesome!. Yes you have to: empty the bin after every room (at least), clean the brush often, help it when it gets stuck (rarely), and pick it up and put it in the room you want to clean. You don't have to: Lug out a vacuum, plug it in, and push the sucker. Roomba is so labor-free that I've used it in every room, every day since we got it. Only criticism is that it doesn't find the base too well. Usually I just pick it up, put it in front of it and it finds it. Once I let it try on it's own, took it about 20 minutes to find it. But who cares you don't have to vacuum!!!

Roomba (aka Sunny) ROCKS, Oreck is in the closet.
by headsuwin ,Jan 03 '05
Pros: Quiet, fast, deep cleaning, and cooler than sliced bread.
Cons: Does not do stairs, da!
I am a vacuum snob. Living on a fram with a German Shepard, hair and dirt is a never ending battle. I cleaned the floors with a fresh Oreck bag, twice over. Ran the roomba one time. The roomba was half full of dirt and dog hair. I put another fresh bag on the Oreck and gave the house a once over. Almost nothing in the oreck bag. I cut the roomba loose after a 1 hour charge. Roomba picked up a hand full of hair and dirt. The Oreck missed it.
I love my Oreck; but, the roomba rookie has the starters job now!!!!

Unreliable.
by eb_miami ,Dec 07 '04
Pros: Cleans well. Courteous and helpful customer service.
Cons: Unreliable with an unacceptably short manufacturer's guarantee.
The Roomba cleaned our tiled floor well, but it is a complex electro-mechanical device which is fragile and unreliable. The manufacturer, who offers only a 180 day guarantee, obviously does not expect the device to last very long either.

My first Roomba expired in around 3 months and I found that customer service was excellent. The replacement Roomba lasted for about six months.

Do not expect your Roomba to last longer than the in-store guarantee that you are willing to pay for.

Pros: Its ability to get into tight corners & underneath furniture & beds.
Cons: It is a little noisy- but that's how I know it's doing it's job !
Being forever a sceptic, I bought my Roomba from a local store- thinking I could return it easily if not satisfied. There is no way I would part with this little genius. It constantly amazes me with its ability to get into tight corners, & underneath beds & furniture. We have 3 dogs & a cat in our home, so this machine is a Godsend! It picks up the hair like magic-I just have to make sure the roller stays clean-a pair of scissors does the trick.I do not hesitate to recomend this machine to everyone- it really is the best invention since sliced bread! As far as entertainment value- it fascinates the dogs- my big mutt sleeps wrapped around it--it's his buddy !

Room! Room! Roomba?
by cre8lovin ,Dec 30 '05
Pros: Great on tile and wood.
Cons: Didn't pick up the cat hair on my carpets.
I couldn't wait to get started with this roomba! What could be better, than having someone else magically vacuum for me... and initially, I was pretty happy. This little machine is magic on my wood floors, but the minute I got it on my carpets, it was a whole other story. Poor thing just couldn't seem to suck it up. It tried, let me tell you, but it failed miserably. Now, I had been warned that it wasn't that great on long carpets or fringes, but mine was a mid-length! Why wouldn't it work? Maybe my carpet was cheap, but regardless, I'm bummed. Plus my battery died within the first year and the rubber came off the tires. IRobot was good about replacing the tires, but I haven't tried too hard to replace the battery. To be honest, it just isn't doing it for me anymore.

This little machine is awesome!...
by owell388_dt3000 ,Mar 19 '03
This little machine is awesome! If you dislike vacuuming, this is the machine to have. We cannot figure out how it determines its direction, but it does a thorough job anyway. It even senses stairs and backs up and changes direction. Roomba works well on carpeting as well as hardwood floors, and transitions easily. If you don't use the barrier sensor unit, it will work its way through the house without supervision.

Battery technology is underdeveloped
by kmk45koch21 ,Nov 24 '08
Pros: Great idea, cool software.
Cons: Battery capabilities are a joke.
The Roomba was great....while the battery could hold a charge.  After 6 months, the battery was completely dead.  Tried suggested full-charge/discharge cycles, with no success.

Not willing to spend another $70 for another battery and 6 more months of life.

This thing will be great when the battery technology becomes sufficient to robustly power a mobile vacuum cleaner.

Pros: great concept, cleans pet hair well on hardwood
Cons: too fragile, expensive, rarely returns to the docking station, difficult to clean
Bought the Scheduler in December for my wife. Worked for one week before the plastic roller melted into the insert which resulted in the Roomba no longer turning on. Had to pry off the roller rendering it useless even with the roller replacement that comes with the kit. The store gave us a replacement without questions and we were back in action for 2 more weeks until the little sweeper stopped working, the speaker sounded bizarre (no big deal) and it started going around in circles with no direction for about a minute before stopping completely. Cleaned everything out and tried again - same thing. Will try to return and go back to our manual ways of cleaning our hardwood.

The Best Christmas Present!
by suzicoupon ,Dec 28 '05
Pros: Also goes under beds and around furniture.
Cons: Not as powerful as a traditional vacuum. Can get hung up on small rugs.
I got a roomba for Christmas. I would not have bought one for myself, but I was sooo excited when I got one for Christmas.

An awesome little machine, relatively quiet and it just makes it's way around grabbing up the dirt. When it's tired, it goes back to it's docking station to recharge itself.

With two kids and a cat, the roomba is terrific for cleaning up after a heavy day of play, snacks and everyday little messes. The kids were amused chasing it around, but they soon lost interest. The cat also followed it around in sheer amazement.

I was extremely impressed with my new little gadget and roomba'd the enitre house.
